    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was the best job I've ever had to date. I've only worked in four other places, but each job has been quite different. The other interns I was working with were great and we all fit in so well in the office. I was given a lot of freedom by my manager and he gave me work to do that made me feel important and worthwhile - not just some intern that was there to help by going to make coffee and photocopy things all day long.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The people were all lovely and extremely helpful, even when I was getting to know the way of things in the first couple of weeks. They all came over and introduced themselves and offered help and advice on how to work the internal systems. When I was carrying out my work they used to come to me for advice on how to enter their data as they knew my manager was really busy and had told me know everything worked - even just a couple of weeks into the job! It was a great job and I felt pretty important, not as much as my manager, but probably as much as I could have been given the length of time that I was there.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had great support and my manager was available as much ass he possibly could have been. My manager was, quite literally, always on the go. He always had phone conferences and meetings which he had to attend and those were not always in the country. However, even though he was not there all the time, he always talked about the work he gave me and the different ways I could go about it, so that when he was not there I could have some direction. He didn't treat me like a child and let me figure out where to get the rest of the information for myself because he would tell me where the important information could be found. If I ever had any questions or concerns he would show me how to navigate around any problems right away. When he wasn't there he made sure that I could always reach him by email and even though he was in a completely different time zone he got back to me asap. On the first few days of my placement, he was in America but he ensured that a colleague of his was there to welcome me and help me settle in. He even left some things for me to look over so that I could get used to the jargon used and not feel lost.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was usually quite busy. There were a few lulls because I tend to get through work quite quickly and there were a couple of hours on a couple of days where I did not really have much to do at all because I was after finishing the main thing I had been working on. My manager got used to giving me a couple of things to do at the start of the placement because he was so busy and it would keep me occupied so that I wouldn't have to wait for him to get back before moving on with work. Naturally that didn't always work out and I had worked through everything I had to do on two occasions and was simply waiting for a few workers to get back to me with information I needed to complete the last job I was doing. Those were the only times though, apart from that I was either pretty busy or had just enough work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I think I was given a lot of responsibility considering I was only an intern. I had pretty much just started and I was drawing up a presentation that my manager was going to give to the next tier of management, outlining the facts and figures of the office for the year to date and the most recent monthly breakdown. I felt pretty important because I was going through it with my manager and even his manager and they were giving it priority over some of their other work so that it could be good enough for the presentation. As well as that I had access to some of the internal systems that the other interns and people in the office did not even have, which was really cool.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think they will be quite useful. I worked a lot with Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint, which I had already worked with before, but not half as much as I did in the office so I got pretty handy with the tricks to using them. That will definitely come in useful in the future, it will save me a lot of time and effort in college and likely in the workplace too. I got to use some of the internal systems which was really cool because I could see how they can pull information from different platforms and export the data, and hopefully wherever I end up working in the future might have similar programs and it will help me in those situations. I got to work on my communication skills too because I was contacting employees in both Ireland and the US and got to chat with a lot of people in the office which was great.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was really good. I'd been into another office before and it was icy, but in Verizon, even though everyone was always super busy, they were relaxed and focused in a way I haven't seen before. At lunch it was all jokes and laughter and the kitchen area is always open, so people can get a cup of tea or coffee whenever they want and say hi to whoever they meet along the way. It's like the whole office is like a beehive - super busy but buzzing with a great atmosphere.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was quite well set up, but they did take on an extra intern, so there was a small juggle the first two days making sure that everyone knew what they were doing. Most of us were slotted in great but two interns went into one area and they were sitting with each other and had to figure out how to split their work most equally. It was only until the second day but they got the hang of it, they were both eager beavers but they worked it out great.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Quite a bit really, even though the placement was for two months. Our whole first day was training and then they have an online training and development system, where we had to do a few of those ourselves the next day. After those training sessions were done there were loads of other training exercises they had available. For a couple of the interns who had never really worked with Excel before they really liked those and I went through a lot of the policies because I was quite interested in those.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Pretty appealing. I had thought I would end up emigrating to Australia, like everyone else my age, but after working in there I can see the appeal of staying. They have such a good atmosphere in the office and everyone is so nice, the ten am start and little kitchen are already great! I would definitely consider working for Verizon in future, even though it's in a completely different area to what I'm studying.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • It was great. There were plans to go out together after work quite often, which I sadly could not go to most of the time because of bus schedules, but we always had great fun together and even entered a Verizon intern competition which we won! We always had lunch together and on Wednesdays we would always head down to the food market at lunch, and when it was sunny we sat outside by the pond which was nice.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It was moderate, a bit more expensive than the middle of town, simply because it's harder to get to the shops can get away with charging a bit more. There was a bar and restaurant across from the office where there was a company party one day and it had moderate prices. Not the most expensive place but not cheap either. There was a Centra shop beneath it which was alright price-wise, a bit higher than usual because it's pretty hard to go anywhere else. There was a mildly expensive sandwich/lunch/coffee shop further down that did fancier food too.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Well the office is smack bang in the middle of a business park, so the only kind of nightlife is in the bar accross from the office or once I saw a party down by the coffee shop, which was a bit strange. The bar is usually pretty busy on a Friday, and we went there once for a staff party and it was really busy when we went in. They had music and the drinks were good, but I left at around half 8 so I never really stayed late enough to call it nightlife, more like eveninglife, but we had good fun in there. Nobody really stays too late in there because it can take a while to get home. A lot of people drive in too, so they can't drink either.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Well, funnily enough, they were actually only setting up the sports and social club when we were there, so I'm not too sure what the situation is now. When I was there they had a welcome party for the new staff and there was a 4th of July party when the head of the office was heading back to the States and a new head was coming in, if those count. They were planning on having a Christmas party anyway before the sports and social club was being set up though, but we were leaving soon so we weren't really part of that. We did take part in the Verizon intern selfie competition, which was really fun, and we ended up winning even though we were in Ireland, which was fantastic!
