    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I loved my time at Linklaters. Whilst it obviously was not a holiday, it a was an incredibly enjoyable experience thanks to the exciting programme and people I met. I had a very accurate view into the life at the firm and yet made some fantastic memories and was treated to some fantastic experiences - whilst being paid! It was almost too good to be true... I would gladly complete another vacation scheme at Linklaters!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt valued from the moment of sending my application. Something that really stands out about Links is their personal touch. Graduate recruitment know you by name, and make an effort to get to know you more. You are not simply a number or piece of paper. For example, grad rec sent round cards welcoming us to the firm, Christmas cards before we arrived, and made sure to catch up with us regularly. Other people at the firm also went above and beyond, even the partner who interviewed me dropped me an e-mail and made the effort to go for a coffee to see how I was getting on.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • The guidance and support was incredible. The whole programme was very clear from the outset, with good communication beforehand. The first day was very well organised and we received a pack which explained everything we needed to know. It was also clear that if we had any questions we could as anyone, and the atmosphere was very friendly. Trainees were keen to offer tips and advice wherever possible, and many of the sessions we had helped us with soft skills as well as knowledge e.g. for the Training Contracts interviews.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The vacation scheme went beyond what I expected in terms of a learning experience. On top of working in a professional environment and learning specific technical knowledge, there were sessions testing out negotiating skills, networking opportunities, and general advice for applications and future steps. The programme has certainly allowed me develop my professional skills which are invaluable in the legal profession. With regards to degree studies, the ability to time manage and conduct research for the project will no doubt come in handy.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • I cannot think of any improvements! The first day was dedicated to introductions and included taxi treasure hunt, allowing us to get to know our fellow vac schemers. The time spent in practice was split over two departments which was perfect - allowing us to see a suitable amount of real work alongside sessions which were well-timed to go with our project. Social events were frequent but not overwhelming, and the project deadline was reasonable.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and happy to be there. Everyone I met was honest and eager to help, and amongst the vac schemers there was a great sense of friendship. It was not a competitive environment at all, rather the contrary, where the aim was to allow you to reach your full potential and improve as much as possible. It was an inspiring and buzzing professional environment.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm invested enormously, from making sure we had the IT skills necessary to complete the placement to putting on sessions for soft skills such as negotiating and networking. I felt very valued and the time and financial investment was very clear. At the level of a vacation schemer, I think the amount of investment was perfect as there is only so much we can do!

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The 3 week scheme was a perfect amount to see an accurate insight into what it would be like to be a trainee at the firm. By seeing two departments we were able to make comparisons and already have an idea of what type of work attracted us. Working for a principal and also having a trainee buddy meant we were exposed to all aspects of work and I found myself completing real tasks that trainees were set. The hours were not realistic - but we all know what to expect!

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • There is no better way to understand the culture than to work in the firm for at least a few weeks. Being in practice meant we saw how the firm really operates, and not just how it presents itself. It was eye-opening and pleasing to see that the firm lives up to its expectations and offers a culture designed to allow people to excel.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • By seeing two practice departments already we had an idea of the difference type of work that could be taken on at the firm and whether it pleased us - of course alongside a view of commercial law in general. By exchanging experiences with fellow vac schemers a broader view was also possible, as well as the numerous sessions from the key departments explaining their work and orientation. It was an invaluable experience for me in helping me decide which career path to take as I was hesitant as to whether or no to even pursue the career of a solicitor before the scheme!

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • We were paid £300 a week for the scheme, with no reimbursements for travel or accommodation. It was an average salary compared to other firms, but with the social activities and food we received we were spoilt rotten and it was more than enough to cover accommodation for those who had to pay.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • We had plenty of social activities where there were always at least a few trainees with whom we could network and ask questions. Moreover, through events such as partner breakfasts, dinners and pitching competitions we were exposed to those at all levels of the firm and given the opportunity to ask any questions we had. In practice we were also always introduced to the team and everyone was happy to chat about working at the firm.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • The social events were amazing! A taxi treasure hunt, drinks, climbing the 02, Thames Rib Experience, dinner at Mayfair, partner breakfast, cooking classes, and a farewell lunch... Can't complain at all! They were all very well organised, fun and enjoyable. There was no pressure to stay late and it didn't feel like we were constantly being assessed. I had such a good time and was spoiled rotten!

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • The clubs and trips that we could get involved with at the firm were clearly advertised and we could find out more through asking questions easily.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • The scheme was fantastic, and I would recommend it to anyone thinking about commercial law in general and specifically magic circle firms with no hesitation. It is a great way to have a real insight into the life of a trainee at the top end of the spectrum, whilst being treated to unique experiences and making great friends! I wish I could do it again!
