Engineering Student Placement - 3 Opportunities Available
The engineering team at Boehringer Ingelheim plays a pivotal role in the company’s mission to improve human and animal health by driving innovation, ensuring operational excellence and maintaining a high standard of safety and quality in all technical processes. As a part of a family- owned, research-driven global pharmaceutical company the engineering team contributes to the process and technical development by designing, optimising and maintaining the systems and processes that meet all regulations and compliance.
This internship will allow the selected candidate to gain hands-on experience in an engineering environment, working within a dynamic team on cutting-edge projects. Responsibilities will involve:
- Walkdowns of plant rooms and production areas to enable P&ID creation and updates.
- Collaborating with engineers to support project planning, design, and implementation.
- Assisting with the development and testing of prototypes and system components.
- Supporting data collection and analysis for various engineering tasks.
- Participating in cross-functional team meetings, offering technical insights.
- Conducting research on industry innovations to support ongoing projects.
- Maintaining and troubleshooting equipment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
- Participating in the creation and review of risk assessments, engineering documents and standard operating procedures (SOP’s) within a GMP environment.
PROCESS ENGINEERING X 1
The intern will be embedded within the Engineering department and focused on process engineering initiatives. Process engineering supports end-to-end manufacturing of biopharmaceutical vaccines, ensuring plant is safe, compliant, and effective.
It is of vital importance in major hazard industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals associated with loss of containment of hazards. Effective process engineering management systems also help to optimise business efficiency, reduce downtime, compliance and protect assets, as well as business reputation.
The core responsibilities include:
- Improving equipment piping and instrumentation drawings (P&ID) and documents for technical accuracy.
- Participate in process safety risk assessments and developing solutions to close safety actions.
- Assist with the generation of engineering documents for effective communication and traceability (GMP).
- Support a range of project initiatives that are focused on either process safety or pharmaceutical compliance.
MAINTENANCE ENGINEERING x 1
The intern will be embedded within the engineering department and focused on maintenance engineering activities and initiatives. The maintenance team supports end-to-end manufacturing of biopharmaceutical vaccines, ensuring plant is safe, compliant and effective.
- Help the maintenance teams (electrical, mechanical or calibration) to improve the delivery and efficiency of their daily operations.
- Use the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to generate reports, KPIs and record activities.
- Support investigations into deviations and the implementation of Corrective and Preventative Actions.
- Participate in safety risk assessments and develop solutions to close safety actions.
- Assist with generating engineering documents (work orders, reports, SOPs, etc) for improvements, effective communication and traceability.
- Support a range of project initiatives that are focused on maintenance improvement, safety or pharmaceutical compliance.
Requirements
- 3 A levels at grade BBC (minimum) with at least one grade coming from either maths or science.
- Applicants must have the ability for independent travel to work and other potential third-party locations.
- Applicants must have the right to work in the UK
Project Engineering
- Applicants will be studying for an accredited degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering.
- Strong academic performance with relevant coursework in engineering principles
- Previous exposure to engineering software tools (e.g., CAD, MATLAB, etc.) is an advantage.
- A proactive mindset and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Process Engineering
- Applicants will be studying for a BEng Chemical, Process, Bioprocess, or other equivalent degree.
- Desire to work within highly regulated Process Engineering sectors.
- Excellent documentation skills to generate well-presented reports, specifications, and other engineering documentation.
- Strong communication skills within a business environment e.g. active listening and communicating with clarity and simplicity.
- Ability to self-learn and leveraging available standards, specifications and best practice guidance.
- Ability to visit highly controlled environments following strict procedures, i.e. showering out of restricted laboratories.
Maintenance Engineering
- Applicants will be studying for a BEng in Maintenance Engineering, Process, Bioprocess or other equivalent degree.
- Applicants must be able to comply with bio-safety regulations that apply to working in a SAPO4 facility.
