The Apprentice Non-Destructive Testing Engineering Technician role is based within our Naval Marine business area.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

The role

The difference our new Apprentice Non-Destructive Testing Engineering Technician will make:

As an Apprentice Non-Destructive Testing Engineering Technician, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. The NDT team continues to grow thanks to the ongoing work on ships and submarines at Devonport and this could be your opportunity to join Babcock in an exciting and important role.

Day to day, you’ll complete all forms of NDT to a given specification and censor the results to the applicable acceptance standards. Non-destructive testing is an engineering science-based profession that requires competent Engineering Technicians to inspect materials, welds, components, and plant to verify their integrity without rendering them unfit for further service.

We offer flexible working to give people more options to better integrate their work and personal life, whilst ensuring that business needs are met. This role based Onsite at Plymouth and will involve some time spent away from Plymouth for technical training

Essential experience and Qualifications

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) grades 9-4 including English and Maths at Grade 5.
  • A proactive approach to problem solving
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good organisational skills with an excellent attention to detail.
  • The ability to act independently but also to work and contribute to a team environment.
  • You should have the ability to obtain SC Clearance
