Product Engineering - Electronics & Complex Systems Undergraduate

We’re reimagining the future of movement. Our vision of a sustainable future of modern luxury by design is at the heart of our next generation thinking and our new generation of talent. Pioneering apprentices, change-driving undergraduates and ground-breaking graduates all play their part.

Together with everyone who proudly works at Jaguar Land Rover, you can be the future of movement. Going from A-B is changing, for good. Can you take us there?

Our programmes are aimed at people who have a passion for learning and a passion for pioneering. Ambitious, innovative and determined people, who respect our heritage and think beyond the challenges of today to build the cars of tomorrow. With a blend of hands-on experience and qualifications to target, our undergraduates work on projects that are fundamental to our global success.

Show us your passion and performance, and we may give you the opportunity to progress onto our graduate programme.

Electronics and Complex Systems

Automotive systems are increasing in complexity and becoming highly distributed across the vehicle platform. Electronics systems and their components are the driving force behind our cutting-edge customer facing features, from assisted and automated driving to the quality-of-life improvements our customers expect in using their vehicles. The robust design and implementation of a complex system powered by electronics helps positively shape the customers’ experiences through benefits that can be relied upon day in and day out.

Within Jaguar Land Rover, our Electronics and Complex Systems engineering teams are responsible for designing and developing these complex systems and their components, to provide the experiences that customers will love for life. As a successful undergraduate in this area of engineering, you will work closely with a team of experienced engineers who will guide and support your growth into becoming an experienced member of the electronics engineering community.

Within Electronic and Complex Systems Engineering there is the opportunity to use cutting edge tools and processes to follow the systems engineering process. Using model-based techniques to support the design and early validation of the system, and proven electronic design practices, you will support in providing premium features and consistent quality that our customers expect from the Jaguar Land Rover brand.

There are many different projects that you could be engaged in from day one including electronics product delivery or development. You could be part of a team driving the design, development and validation of Jaguar Land Rover’s cutting-edge technology solutions, in compliance with relevant design standard, rules and requirements using the business tools. Or you could be working on model development and simulation at either system or component level, interfacing with multiple stakeholders to ensure all appropriate Jaguar Land Rover requirements and standards are met throughout product development lifecycle, develop and maintain engineering design documentation.

The Teams

During your 12 months placement you’ll have opportunities to design, develop and shape the future for our electronics and complex systems, working on a wide range of projects in the following teams:

Core Engineering

Core Engineering builds the precision and pride into every vehicle that inspires loyalty in our customers. Every conceivable aspect of the manufacturing process is overseen, refined and continuously improved and reinvented here. Core Engineering undergraduate placements could be in: Body and Chassis Engineering; Electrical Engineering, Powertrain, Product Engineering Operations and Research.

Body and Chassis

Body and Chassis Engineering is where the vehicle design and character become the actual product. It’s engineering's role to provide our customers great cars to look at, live with and live in, and that are also safe and sustainable. This requires engineering excellence, precision, and attention to detail. The department is mainly organised in Programme Delivery, Commodity and Attributes.

Body Engineering is everything that you touch and see in the car. The Body commodities are Lids, Doors, Structures, Cabin and Safety, Cockpit, Climate, Seats, Exteriors, Lighting and Glazing & Roofs. The Body attributes areas are Perceived Quality, Materials & Sustainability, and Vehicle Safety.

Chassis Engineering is everything that moves you in the car to provide a wonderful driving experience on road/off road and to deliver wonderful dynamics and motion control systems for every situation. The Chassis commodities are Axle Group, Steering Function, Brakes Engineering and Suspension Function. The Chassis attributes area looks after Driving Dynamics and off-road capability.

Electrical

Electrical Engineering delivers smart, connected, clean vehicles through creativity and design innovation and offers opportunities in a variety of digital disciplines. The scope for Electrical Engineering is wide and covers complex systems design as well as electronic hardware and software creation. The features you may expect such as cabin interior functions or infotainment but also technologies such as connectivity, off-board processing and mobile app design to provide a wider range of customer experience.

Powertrain

Jaguar Land Rover Powertrain Engineering are leaders in the design, test, validation and certification of world class propulsion systems. The scope of the propulsion systems is far reaching and includes major commodity groups such as engines, transmissions, drivelines, electric drive units, energy storage devices and are complemented by software system integration, calibration and control strategies.

Powertrain use state of the art build, test and sign off facilities to provide the power and driving force behind our vehicles – using the combined expertise of our cross functional teams to find the ideal balance between performance, sustainability and refinement, while responding to the rapidly changing environmental issues that shape our industry.

Regardless of which team you join, you’ll be at the heart of Jaguar Land Rover’s Electronics and Complex Systems strategy, bringing to life concepts and turning them into reality, for our customers.

What’s required

Excellence runs throughout our entire business, and we expect you to be the same. So, as well as being on track to secure a degree in systems engineering; electrical engineering; electronic and communications engineering; computer science; software engineering or cryptography at 2:2 level or higher, you’ll need drive, creativity, a keen eye for detail, and a never-ending commitment to delivering results.

Please be aware that our undergraduate placement opportunities are only open to penultimate year students (i.e., students who will be returning to their final year of study following their placement with us).

All our undergraduate programmes have a fixed start date commencing June 20th 2022 and will run for a duration of 12 months.

Rewards and Benefits

Your innovation and creativity will be challenged every day, as you develop a rigorous and commercially focused approach in your work. And, with on-going support from industry leading experts and continual learning opportunities, you’ll quickly realise that our programmes have been designed to be as inspiring as the pioneering vehicles you’ll help produce.

Whichever part of the business you join your hard work and contribution deserves recognition. A generous holiday allowance will also be yours, as will many other benefits such as our privilege car purchase scheme, our pension scheme and access a range of deals and discounts from various retailers and sports clubs.
