Product Engineering - Hardware & Mechatronics Undergraduate

We’re reimagining the future of movement. Our vision of a sustainable future of modern luxury by design is at the heart of our next generation thinking and our new generation of talent. Pioneering apprentices, change-driving undergraduates and ground-breaking graduates all play their part.

Together with everyone who proudly works at Jaguar Land Rover, you can be the future of movement. Going from A-B is changing, for good. Can you take us there?

Our programmes are aimed at people who have a passion for learning and a passion for pioneering. Ambitious, innovative and determined people, who respect our heritage and think beyond the challenges of today to build the cars of tomorrow. With a blend of hands-on experience and qualifications to target, our undergraduates work on projects that are fundamental to our global success.

Show us your passion and performance, and we may give you the opportunity to progress onto our graduate programme.

Hardware and Mechatronics

Hardware and Mechatronics is at the heart of all Jaguar Land Rover vehicles and fundamental to how we respond to the future challenges in the automotive industry. From the vehicle dynamics and off-road capability (key differentiators for Jaguar Land Rover) through to noise vibration harshness (NVH), the door systems and headlamps, to glazing and seats, our engineers focus on everything from mechanical design, integration and system engineering to ensure detailed execution and the highest levels of craftsmanship.

Hardware and Mechatronics engineering is responsible for all aspects of vehicle delivery. Defining features and attributes, integrating complex devices that control electromechanical systems and for the detailed engineering design, release and verification process that results in award winning products that provide experiences people will love for life.

We believe in delivering outstanding customer experiences. This is supported by the creative and innovative skills of our people as well as the range of tools and processes we use. Failure mode and effect analysis is fundamental to provide safety critical, high performing and high-quality systems for our customers. Through the design and verification process you will utilise both Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) toolsets to deliver the engineering specifications, and with world class system engineering tools assist us in designing our electromechanical control systems.

As the customers vehicle interactions become more automated, an increasing number of interactions with the mechanical systems are controlled with electronic modules.

The Teams

During your 12 months placement you’ll have opportunities to design, develop and shape the future for our hardware and mechatronics, working on a wide range of projects in the following teams:

Core Engineering

Core Engineering builds the precision and pride into every vehicle that inspires loyalty in our customers. Every conceivable aspect of the manufacturing process is overseen, refined and continuously improved and reinvented here. Core Engineering undergraduate placements could be in: Body and Chassis Engineering; Vehicle Engineering and Product Engineering Operations.

Body and Chassis

Body & Chassis Engineering is where the vehicle design and character become the actual product. It’s engineering's role to provide our customers a great car to look at, live with and live in, which are both safe and sustainable. This requires engineering excellence, precision, and attention to detail. Within Body and Chassis you may have a highly technical role as part of the CAE team or as part of a commodity such as seating. You will become part of a team focusing on delivering high quality engineering solutions but be required to work with many cross functional teams from design and attribute teams to purchasing and our suppliers.

Vehicle Engineering

Vehicle Engineering is the key technical department for the product creation process leading the engineering from concept to customer. We manage the technical content of programmes, balancing customer attributes and commodities to achieve delivery of content to launch and to create vehicles that provide customers with 'experiences they will love for life'.

In the Vehicle Engineering team, you will be working with multiple teams across the organisation to understand how the electronic and mechanical systems interface with one another. You will be required to engage with stakeholders across the vehicle platform to ensure a robust interaction between the electronic modules and mechanical movement, to provide the experience our customers will love for life. This could be from moving a seat to a position personalised to the occupant every time they use the vehicle, to improving the accessibility to the vehicle by opening the door upon request.

Product Engineering Operations (PE Ops)

Product Engineering Operations underpin technical innovation and product delivery with engineering delivery, tools and processes and specialist technical services to deliver our world class products. We are a diverse team that harnesses a variety of skill sets, from information management and data analytics, to building and testing prototypes.

In this team you will be involved at every stage of the engineering process and help drive an exciting transformation in the way we engineer and deliver our products with class leading technology and quality. You could get involved in activities to make sure components are engineered efficiently optimizing quality, performance and cost.

Regardless of which pathway you are on you be at the heart of Jaguar Land Rover’s Hardware and Mechatronics Engineering strategy, bringing to life concepts and turning them into reality, for our customers.

What’s required

Excellence runs throughout our entire business, and we expect you to be the same. So, as well as working towards a degree in any engineering discipline; mechatronics; computer science/programming; physics; chemistry and maths at 2:2 level or higher, you’ll need drive, creativity, a keen eye for detail, and a never-ending commitment to delivering results.

Please be aware that our undergraduate placement opportunities are only open to penultimate year students (i.e., students who will be returning to their final year of study following their placement with us).

All our undergraduate programmes have a fixed start date commencing June 20th 2022 and will run for a duration of 12 months.

Rewards and Benefits

Your innovation and creativity will be challenged every day, as you develop a rigorous and commercially focused approach in your work. And, with on-going support from industry leading experts and continual learning opportunities, you’ll quickly realise that our programmes have been designed to be as inspiring as the pioneering vehicles you’ll help produce.

Whichever part of the business you join your hard work and contribution deserves recognition. A generous holiday allowance will also be yours, as will many other benefits such as our privilege car purchase scheme, our pension scheme and access a range of deals and discounts from various retailers and sports clubs.
