Gaining a leadership mentality matters

If learning what it takes to deliver a reliable train service matters to you. You matter to us. Our General Management placements offer the chance to work with the expert team responsible for keeping Britain’s most extensive transport network running. You’ll get insight into the diverse challenges our huge company faces, alongside the opportunity to help us progress, develop and grow our operation.

With support from great colleagues, and coaching from a senior team member, you’ll develop important commercial skills that can apply to any future career direction you might take. Though as it happens, many General Management placement students who do well go on to our graduate scheme, before rising through the ranks to senior leadership positions.

Who you are matters

We look for people who have the kind of infectious enthusiasm for the job at hand that can motivate everyone around to go that extra mile. You’ll be polite and tactful, friendly and engaging, and know how to handle people to get the best out of them. Your excellent communication abilities, particularly when it comes to writing emails, will ensure you can get your message across to audiences at all levels of the business and industry. With superb planning and organisational skills, and a resourceful approach to solving problems, you’ll be able to adapt to any situation or circumstances this placement throws at you.

What you’ll be doing matters

It’s not easy getting millions of people to their destinations safely and on time every day, but it is rewarding. During your placement, you’ll get the inside track on what goes into achieving this goal. Expect to work with suppliers, freight operators, and other external stakeholders, alongside operations and business services within our organisation.

You’ll pick up a lot just by watching how the best in the business operate. And with the support of an experienced mentor, you can expect to play an active role in many important day to day activities.

The entry requirements matter

You’ll be in your penultimate year at university, and on track to achieve at least a 2:2 in any degree.
