Register Your Interest - New Categories Applied Science Placement - 2022 Intake

In the UK, we offer 12-months placement - starting 1st of September 2022 - opportunities to undergraduate students looking to gain practical experience within a vibrant and innovative industrial setting. As part of the scheme, you will be partnered with a mentor, have regular reviews with your Line Manager and work on projects that impact the business.

Training and development is provided throughout the placement with successful applicants having multiple opportunities to develop transferable skills in addition to gaining ‘hands on’ experience in a technical discipline.

As part of the scheme students get a chance to cultivate their independent thinking and problem solving skills in addition to working in and contributing to a team. Cross functional/department working and participation in other research activities is also encouraged, where appropriate. Previous work experience in a practical ‘hands-on’ role would be useful but not essential.

Job purpose

An intern is required to support/manage a number of key science activities/projects, which will build product science understanding to underpin and enable the development and continuous improvement of New Category products. The responsibility of this role would be to scope and define studies, conduct/support testing, analyses data, write reports providing recommendations and outcomes to support product development. Additionally, you will be responsible for generating data that will support the assessment of new technologies and products to support commercialisation.

Requirements

An undergraduate degree course in chemistry or material science related disciplines with the ability to conduct experiments and investigate science from first principles.

Key skills required

  • To have understanding on designing and conducting scientific experimental studies which are robust, while building technical capability and fundamental product knowledge.
  • To be able to deliver technical reviews (presenting), focused on key outcomes that enable advancements in product development, in a challenging development focused environment.
  • To have skills in reviewing scientific challenges from first principles, resulting in proposing the ways to address, in a time pressured environment.
  • To have experience in writing scientific reports.
  • To have skills in project management, time management which can be transferred to an R&D environment.

Candidates will need to have:

  • A relevant undergraduate degree (see individual placement opportunities), with a minimum predicted grade of 2:1
  • The right to live and work in the UK
  • IT skills e.g. use of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
