Communications and Government Affairs and Global Health Industrial Placement

As a science-led, global healthcare company, our image and reputation are incredibly important to us. Communications and Government Affairs (CGA) placement students are an integral part of our team in helping communicate our values, and our product and business developments in a clear and compelling manner.

A placement in Communications and Government Affairs (CGA) could entail a placement in the Communications team, the Government Affairs and Policy team or the Global Health team. We have a number of placements available in those teams and some teams offer combined roles, so a blend of communications and government affairs roles. You will be attending a combined CGA and Global Health virtual assessment centre and then if successful, be allocated to one of the roles on offer.

Communications team

The Communications team gives GSK a voice. We engage, inspire and inform our employees. Externally, we look after our global brand image and reputation. How do we do this? By coming up with and delivering clear and consistent messages to patients, consumers and doctors, shareholders, investors, partners, the media and the general public.

Our placements offer you the opportunity to work with our various teams to support the communications requirements of the business both internally and/or externally. Whatever your role, you’ll have the opportunity to work with and learn from communications colleagues across the business and all over the world.

A communications placement is a great chance to apply the skills you have learned at university in a ‘live’ role and learn new ones. The work will bring you into contact with people across the business, external organisations and the media, so you’ll be constantly developing your interpersonal skills. You’ll also build your organisational and problem-solving abilities while also building a network of contacts across the business.

Global Corporate Government Affairs and Policy (GCGAP) team

You might also get to do a placement in the Global Corporate Government Affairs and Policy (GCGAP) team, also part of CGA. The Government Affairs and Policy team supports all parts of GSK by identifying political and environmental trends and developing strategies to maximise advantage, or mitigate risks, for the business.

We focus on those opportunities and risks created by the decisions that governments make, as well as working with multilateral government organisations, civil society groups and industry associations, as they too contribute to, and shape, public policy decisions. This role will support the delivery of projects including by assisting with research and analysis, stakeholder monitoring and providing project management support to the GCGAP team members on fast-moving policy areas.

Global Health team

Finally, you might get to experience being a part of the Global Health team. As a business, we aim to have a high impact on global health by using our scientific knowledge to reduce disease burden, especially on the world’s poorest populations. Our focus is on infectious diseases in children and adolescents in the developing world with particular attention on TB, malaria and HIV/AIDs. The placement in Global Health will allow you to be part of incredible projects, from creating and implementing strategies to making our medicines more accessible in less developed countries to assisting with product donations during disease outbreak or natural disaster. On one day of your placement you may be meeting with various partners to discuss current and future projects such as our healthcare worker programmes and another day you might be drafting a proposal about a potential new project your team have created to improve access to a lifesaving medicine.
