Surface Observations Metadata Industrial Placement 2021

Our Industrial Placement scheme offers ambitious, capable undergraduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience working alongside experts in their field.

Why should I choose the Met Office?:

As an Industrial Placement within the Surface Networks team at the Met Office, you will be paid £17,900 pa and have the opportunity to spend 12 months (between July 2021 - July 2022) working alongside an operational team responsible for collecting the high quality weather observations that are critical in underpinning our world-leading weather forecasts and climate projections. The Observations Industrial Placement scheme is an exciting opportunity to see first-hand what we do, as well as make a real impact that the Met Office truly values.  You will also be joining other placements on this scheme, who will be working in other departments across the office, and past cohorts have supported each other with projects, set up lunch groups and socials.

Tell me a little more about what you do….:

Observed weather data is the foundation of the meteorological value chain, providing real-time information about the state of the atmosphere to our scientists, state-of-the-art supercomputer capability and operational meteorologists to provide the forecast services that we rely on every day.

This cannot be undertaken in isolation from the essential metadata (the data about the data) that surrounds each measurement. This can include the instruments and information about an observing station. The technological landscape has increased demands for more spatial and temporal data, but to make sure we gain greatest benefit from this, we need to ensure that our metadata and associated tools, techniques and data repositories keep pace with this change.

This placement will work with the Surface Observations Networks team and interface with central systems technology and quality management teams to review key metadata tools and user interfaces in use to support develop proof of concept replacements that may be taken into wider use. You will get to work alongside the network managers and also technology leads. The work will also involve working with WMO (World Meteorological Organisation) systems to share metadata with the international OSCAR archive using Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).

Can I apply?:

Otherwise, you can expect to hear from us before the 19th March once the hiring manager has reviewed all the applications received.
