Building Surveyor Industrial Placement 2021

Our Industrial Placement scheme offers ambitious, capable undergraduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience working alongside experts in their field. 

Why should I choose the Met Office?:

As an Industrial Placement at the Met Office, you will be paid £17,900 pa and have the opportunity to spend 12 months (between July 2021 - July 2022) working full-time in the Property Management team based at the Met Office HQ in Exeter. Your role will mainly concentrate on surveying related duties at the main UK sites consisting of 30 frontline properties, as well as Exeter HQ.

The role will therefore entail travel to remote UK sites to undertake progress inspections, monitor quality against specification, ensure compliance with contract conditions, as well as to monitor health and safety compliance, and you will generally be accompanied by experienced property professionals.

You will be part of the property team and will have an experienced, chartered building surveyor as your mentor. Additionally, it is anticipated that you will gain experience working with other professionally qualified team members on matters including those relating to landlord and tenant, project management, health and safety, facilities management, environmental and sustainability issues.

During your placement you can expect to gain some experience in a wide range of surveying core competencies including building inspections, design and specification, contract management, construction health and safety, project management, ensuring compliance with technical standards and regulatory requirements.

You will support team members by providing professional and technical advice to ensure projects and maintenance activities are delivered to the appropriate standards. This will entail assisting with reviewing design proposals, specifying appropriate solutions, reviewing construction phase plans, risk assessments, and method statements.

Tell me a little more about what you do….:

The Property Management team has responsibility for delivery of hard and soft Facilities Management services at Exeter and frontline locations. The estate comprises of over 500 sites across the UK.

Can I apply?:

To become a Building Surveyor Industrial Placement at the Met Office you will need to be someone who: 

  1. Is studying an undergraduate Building Surveying degree accredited by the RICS which MUST incorporate a placement year (i.e. sandwich course)
  2. Can demonstrate evidence of good oral and written communication skills
  3. Can demonstrate you can plan and organise work using own initiative
  4. Has a proven ability to work well as a member of a team
  5. Can demonstrate evidence of problem solving

As well as someone who can desirably demonstrate:

  1. Previous experience of working in construction, facilities management, a property management or a property maintenance environment
  2. The ability to use AutoCAD LT 2019
  3. You are in possession of a full UK driving licence (this is beneficial but not essential)
