Bioinformatics / Data Analyst (Analytical) - Illumina Lab Services - UK Internship

Why Us

Are you seeking a company that will offer you rewarding, challenging work and a chance to make a difference? Then you should consider Illumina's Internship Program.

Illumina Laboratory Services UK (ILS-UK) applies Illumina’s core sequencing technology to large scale and has recently completed the sequencing for the 100K Genomes Project. We are now entering the next phase of the genomics agenda in the UK, to deliver whole-genome sequencing (WGS) into routine healthcare in partnership with Genomics England and the NHS. Our mission is to help improve human health by unlocking the power of the genome.

Why You

When you join the high-performing team at Illumina, your work takes on new meaning—to an exponential degree. Our growth, our positive culture, and the impact our products are having in the world will ignite the same passion in you that drives our people forward. And together, we accomplish beyond expectations.

Our goal is to develop cutting-edge software that integrates results from whole genome DNA sequencing (WGS) and whole transcriptome RNA sequencing (WTS) into a fully integrated report, with the aim of simplifying clinical interpretation.

The role

This is an excellent opportunity to support the Bioinformatics Validation team and experience an interdisciplinary environment where biomedical sciences intersect with clinical applications and to contribute transforming the way information from whole genome sequencing is harnessed for the benefit of patients. Day-to-day activities involve participating in the bioinformatics scientific input development projects, capturing user needs and requirements, thereby supporting validation activities.

Past intern projects have included:

  • Cancer sequencing (WGS)
  • Cloud Software
  • Improved detection of structural variants in DNA
  • Improving the quality of human WGS sequencing
  • Automating cohort-scale genome analysis

Preferred background, skills and experience

  • Currently studying a Bachelor’s or Masters in Computer science, Bioinformatics or a Scientific course which has included modules in bioinformatics, data analyses or computer science
  • An interest in rare disease or cancer genomics and clinical applications of whole genome sequencing.
  • Some experience in programming, ideally Python or R.
  • Experience in next generation sequencing data analysis is advantageous.
