Customs Design Engineer MTO Placement
This placement is part of the Made to Order team in operations, which involves designing custom made, patient specific joint replacement implants and instruments. The role will drive the processes involved to deliver patient specific solutions using the latest technologies, and delivering lead time targets to meet both customer and business requirements.
You will join a dynamic team of design engineers and will ‘own’ real patient cases, leading the end-to end process of design, manufacture and delivery to the hospital. The role will develop your knowledge of high-end 3D CAD systems, FEA, design standards and practices (ISO and ASME) and GD&T. Throughout the year you will receive extensive support and training from a highly supportive team. Role and responsibilities
- Lead the end to end process of design, manufacture and delivery of patient cases.
- Interpret x-rays and custom request forms to determine patient and surgeon requirements
- Create CAD 2D & 3D modelling systems using NX and Team Centre
- Gain experience in CT data segmentation using MIMICs software
- Work closely with CAM, CMM, manufacturing and shop floor teams to establish a clear line of communication through the life of cases
- Develop relationships with all stakeholders and SMEs involved in the MTO process including; CPD Bioengineers, Regulatory, R&D, Distribution, Finance, Commercial, Sterility, Quality, & external vendors
- You will develop skills and competencies in the following area:
- Adaptiv System knowledge – creating and approving parts & documents
- Process Knowledge- Shop floor time spent learning manufacturing process
- Project and time management experience
- Enterprise Resource System to create routes BOMS for MTO parts
- You will support and deliver MTO transformations activities to drive continuous process improvement and lead time reduction activities.

- Computer literate and proficient in MS Office and CAD software applications is preferred.

- Possess a basic understanding of mechanical engineering and manufacturing
- Team working skills and flexibility are essential
- Competent clear, and concise communicator.
Requirements of the role
- 2 years of degree level study completed
- A minimum of 2:1 achieved in first year of study
- Engineering degrees preferred – bio or medical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, automotive engineering and similar
