Embedded Control Engineer Placement

The Intel Programmable Solutions Group is looking for talented, highly motivated University students to develop example designs for embedded applications, for example creating real-time networks to transfer data between devices, embedded control systems for motor drives or robots, or processing data from industrial cameras using neural networks.

You will be responsible for applying mathematical and system engineering skills to analyse architectures and safety aspects as part of a system engineering team. This will be followed by active design on demonstration hardware including FPGAs and other Intel devices. The completed demonstrations will be shown to customers and at international trade shows.

You will work in a rapid learning environment, alongside industry experts, who will support your daily development and knowledge growth. You will follow an Agile engineering development approach, communicating with your team daily to build innovative and creative products. Your opinions and thoughts are valued from day one.

Intel's office in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, houses around 80 employees and is walkable from Marlow station. Employees work hard but also play hard, with weekly badminton, indoor football, cycling and trail running activities.

Key responsibilities:

  • Development of demonstration designs and documentation.
  • FPGA IP Design using Verilog/VHDL, DSP Builder (MATLAB Simulink) or HLS (C-based High Level Synthesis)
  • Embedded C/C++ software development on Linux or real-time operating system
  • Managing requirements and testing including Functional Safety

Qualifications

This is usually a 13 month fixed-term placement (July 2021 - August 2022) suitable for students currently studying a degree course in relevant disciplines (e.g. Electronic Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering), and is targeted at 2nd year students enrolled in a degree which includes a year in industry. However, applications from capable candidates in other University years or seeking alternative time periods will be considered.

Skills include:

  • System modelling and design, considering a number of elements working together
  • Knowledge of electronic hardware elements and interest in FPGA and System-on-Chip
  • Programming skills
  • Team worker with great communication skills
