Our technology serves millions

Our software engineers are crucial to helping us achieve our goal to become the bank of the future. Their work helps us to meet customers’ changing needs, by developing software and services that improve people’s banking experiences. They use cutting-edge innovation like cloud technology, robotics, machine learning and more to improve our digital offering. Our products and services are used by 26 million customers and one million businesses – on their phones, online, at ATMs and in branches around the UK. And thanks to our commitment to modernising digital banking, we won Euromoney’s Best Digital Bank in Western Europe in 2020.

Is our Software Engineering Industrial Placement for you?

Do you have an analytical mindset and an eye for detail? Do you enjoy using or learning about coding? If you also love maths and technology, a Software Engineering Industrial Placement could be right for you.

Our software engineers work closely with teams across the Group, creating bespoke tools that help them solve ever-changing business issues. If you’re open-minded about learning and collaborating, you’ll be supported to grow as a software engineer on this placement.

What you’ll learn on the Software Engineering Industrial Placement

From the moment you start this placement, you’ll work alongside engineers to deliver exceptional service to our customers. You could be improving our internet banking or mobile banking services. You could be learning to use Java or C#. You could also be helping to create a learning culture across the engineering community, and more. Wherever you join, you’ll be given responsibility as a valued member of the team.

Along with structured training sessions, you’ll have opportunities to build a network of colleagues and peers who can help you in your development. You’ll build your leadership skills and have the chance to volunteer for extracurricular activities, such as helping improve people’s digital skills or getting involved in hackathons. And, if you do well within our teams, you could benefit from a fast-track assessment for our graduate scheme.

The work you could be doing

  • Learning how to code in one or more technical languages including Java, C# and SAS, alongside others
  • Supporting the automation of processes to save colleagues and customers time
  • Helping to test new software to make sure it provides a seamless customer experience
  • Looking at mortgage journeys and finding ways to improve them for customers
  • Helping build customer service infrastructure that’s used in branch

We welcome applications from all backgrounds. To apply, you’ll need a basic understanding of at least one modern programming language or framework. You’ll also need a passion for learning and a strong desire to succeed, which could be shown through excellent A-levels, a record of achievement and initiative beyond your studies.
