Data Science and Engineering Internship

Whether you have a background in an Applied Mathematics, Machine Learning, Statistical or a related scientific or engineering degree, our Data Science and Engineering Internship offers the opportunity to experience HSBC’s Data Business within our Global Banking & Markets and Commercial Banking divisions.

What you will do

With our Data Science and Engineering Internship, you’ll take part in a range of activities, projects and networking events. After an induction, where you will learn about our business, culture and how we operate, you will join one of the project teams in our Data Science and Engineering business areas. This will give you an insight into our different businesses and the variety of opportunities available at HSBC. You will be part of a project team that will allow you to develop your analytical skills in various fields. This could be building and changing predictive analytical solutions, big data pipelines, data science and machine learning. You will collaborate with senior leaders and colleagues to create and implement quantitative solutions using different analytical principles. You will also attend educational presentations and workshops throughout your internship to enable you to keep up to date with the fast-paced environment of Data Science and Engineering.

This opportunity will suit those with; a foundational level of programming skills in any language (HSBC uses Python, Scala, Java), knowledge of operating systems such as Linux or similar would be advantageous, knowledge of Big Data Analysis using Spark or Hadoop or similar, and basic knowledge of data structures/types, algorithms, and control logic.

No direct experience is required for the role but any previous experience with transferable skills would be advantageous.

Learning and development

We take your learning and development seriously so that you get the most out of your internship. Your time with us will begin with a one-week induction that will give you an overview of HSBC, our business and culture, and how Data Science & Engineering fits into the overall structure.

At the beginning of your internship, you’ll be set measurable objectives and receive feedback throughout the 10 weeks. There will be many people you can call on for support. Your manager will be able to give you guidance on your career options. You’ll be assigned a graduate buddy to share ideas with and who you can call on for advice.

There will be regular business and social events to attend so you can build a network of global contacts, which will prove invaluable to you in the future.

If you excel in your internship, we shall consider you for a role within our Data Science and Engineering graduate programme the following year. You could be placed in a more specialised position that suits your skills, working alongside like-minded colleagues who share a passion for backing up client decisions with solid data.

Our Summer Internships are tailored to those in their penultimate year of study, but you may also apply if you have graduated already. This is a pipeline onto our 2022 Graduate Programme.

Qualifications

On track for a minimum 2.1 undergraduate degree and must have obtained 120 UCAS points, or for those who passed exams before 2017, 300 UCAS points (or equivalent, excluding General studies)
