Microbiology and Pharmaceutical Microbiology Industrial Placement

A microbiology placement in one of our manufacturing sites will give you hands on practical application of microbial techniques. You’ll be contributing to ensuring our pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare products are manufactured to stringent quality and safety standards.

During your 12 months with us, you’ll gain experience in areas such as:

  • The use and interpretation of data from one or more of the following microbiological techniques / tests: aseptic techniques, identification of microbial isolates, environmental monitoring, endotoxin testing, water monitoring, bioburden monitoring, organism identification, sterility testing
  • Validation of microbial testing methods for tablet or inhaled pharmaceutical products
  • Technical report writing skills
  • Leading laboratory investigations
  • Adopting good laboratory practice
  • Key laboratory techniques such as preparing sample and standard solutions
  • Calibration and maintenance of equipment

We also have an industrial placement opportunity in pharmaceutical microbiology within the Chemistry Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) Analytical department of Product Development and Supply. Your team will be aligned to the development of non-sterile and sterile dosage forms for clinical and commercial supply. You will work closely with your GSK supervisor in the planning and implementation of all aspects of your role. The placement is highly practically based, you will carry out a range of microbiological techniques to support the operation of the non- sterile secondary pilot plant and the development of new drugs.

You will work in a good manufacturing practice regulated environment and gain experience of microbiological techniques and processes aligned to the microbiological control of pharmaceutical dosage forms e.g. Environmental monitoring techniques, Water testing, Microbial identification, Method validation and testing. Your data may be used to make key project decisions and could be reported in submissions to external regulatory authorities.
