The opportunity - why would you want to join us?

We are offering an opportunity for a 12-month placement within our UK network enabling students to take on a role similar to that of a new graduate. You will get real practical work experience, an insight of Air Products and the varied engineering work we do. All of which will provide you with the opportunity to expand your knowledge of a career in engineering.

In addition you can expect:

  • Technical training
  • Personal development and soft skills training
  • Opportunity to shadow senior members of the company
  • Continuous constructive feedback and appraisal
  • Excellent financial rewards / salary
  • Fast track onto our Graduate programme after successful completion of placement and studies

Wireless Intelligent Sensors development

Join us working on innovative new low-cost sensors, using the latest in low-cost high capacity microprocessors and low-power technology to allow wireless operation.
You will be part of a small team of electronic engineers working closely with physicists and experts in high pressure gases and cryogenic liquids. You will have the chance to design schematics, PCB layouts for your own designs, then build and prove them, with a variety of projects throughout the year. Some knowledge of the Internet of Things and its associated protocols would be an advantage. You will need to apply critical thinking to analyse problems, handling large data sets of results and engineering innovative solutions. In order to achieve this, you will receive extensive on the Job training.

The Placement will involve:

  • Analog & digital hardware Design (Schematic, Board Layout, Prototype building / testing using surface mount technology)
  • Firmware development (C)
  • Software development (C#, Python)
  • Data analysis (using Excel, MATLAB…)

You will have the chance to work at problems which will develop your skills in team-working, pure electronics as well as physics of sensors. Your work could revolutionize the world of industrial gas – put electronics onto a furnace full of molten glass – or put our unique Molecular Mass Meter in the toolbox of a thousand engineers around the world. And you will need an innovative mindset to make electronics tough – really tough. Gas cylinders are made of some of the strongest alloys, as well as Kevlar and carbon fibre. We use gas down to -196°C (liquid nitrogen temperature) or under massive 300 atmospheres pressure. And our electronics must match.

You will need to be

You will be studying a sandwich degree in Electronic Engineering (on track to achieve a 2:1 or above preferably MEng). You will already possess excellent communication skills and will be looking to enhance these further in your placement. You will have practical experience of designing and building electronic circuits. Finally, you will have lots of enthusiasm, passion for your discipline and enjoy working with others. In return we promise to challenge you in rewarding ways!

The practicals
