New Science Placement

In the UK, we offer 12-months placement opportunities - starting 31st August 2020 - to undergraduate students looking to gain practical experience within a vibrant and innovative industrial setting. As part of the scheme, you will be partnered with a mentor, have regular reviews with your Line Manager and work on projects that impact the business.

Training and development is provided throughout the placement with successful applicants having multiple opportunities to develop transferable skills in addition to gaining ‘hands on’ experience in a technical discipline.

As part of the scheme students get a chance to cultivate their independent thinking and problem solving skills in addition to working in and contributing to a team. Cross functional/departmental working and participation in other research activities is also encouraged, where appropriate. Previous work experience in a practical ‘hands-on’ role would be useful but not essential.

Function & Job Overview:

The New Sciences function focuses on fundamental science and breakthrough scientific proof of principle which informs and powers innovation. New Sciences explores new frontiers of science that could present opportunities for BAT and then builds the foundation of science that is needed to unlock them. Our aim is to keep BAT ahead of the innovation curve, providing novel and ground-breaking science that allow us to excel in our new product offerings – more innovation, more choice.

In this role, the successful candidate will be primarily responsible for supporting the Applied Science workstream of the New Sciences function, helping to develop fundamental scientific understanding and breakthrough scientific research which informs and powers innovation in support of our new product categories.

Requirements:

• Be undertaking an industrial sandwich degree course
• An undergraduate / graduate degree in Bioscience, Psychology, Neuroscience or related field, with a minimum grade of 2:1
• The right to live and work in the UK
• IT skills e.g. use of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Excellent communication and project management skills
• Strong team player who collaborates with peers to support critical projects and deliverables
• Can do attitude and drives for results
• Comfortable working in a rapidly changing, fast moving environment

Principal Accountabilities:

• Reviewing and summarizing scientific literature, effectively communicating and presenting findings.
• Helping to design and manage scientific proof of principle efficacy studies that inform future business direction.
• Collaborating cross-functionally with various internal teams and external agencies and scientists.
• Access to various opportunities (e.g. consumer testing, sensory evaluations, ideation, technology scouting, patent analysis etc) as a part of training and testing.
