Engineering (Consumer Behaviour) Placement

In the UK, we offer 12-months placement opportunities - starting 31st August 2020 - to undergraduate students looking to gain practical experience within a vibrant and innovative industrial setting. As part of the scheme, you will be partnered with a mentor, have regular reviews with your Line Manager and work on projects that impact the business.

Training and development is provided throughout the placement with successful applicants having multiple opportunities to develop transferable skills in addition to gaining ‘hands on’ experience in a technical discipline.

As part of the scheme students get a chance to cultivate their independent thinking and problem solving skills in addition to working in and contributing to a team. Cross functional/departmental working and participation in other research activities is also encouraged, where appropriate. Previous work experience in a practical ‘hands-on’ role would be useful but not essential.

Context / Environment

The drivers of growth, value and competitive advantage in the tobacco industry are changing due to increased regulation. The major challenge for BAT will be the ability to offer a portfolio of differentiated product experiences through innovations that enable BAT to compete successfully under any future market scenario. The Product Compliance Team specifically addresses this issue by providing product regulatory interpretations and validation, regulatory compliance assessments, and notifications and compliance reporting, as part of the technical compliance evaluation package which is relied upon by BAT for successful innovations.

The intern will learn to meet the challenges facing a global business and the product regulatory landscape. They will get experience of working and applying their knowledge within an international context and learn about global markets and international compliance.

This intern placement will be a springboard to take on a career with an international business in roles such as compliance management, regulatory affairs, product/business law, project management, compliance-data analysts and more.

Requirements:

  • Be undertaking an industrial sandwich degree course
  • A relevant undergraduate degree (Business, Law, Business and Management, Business Law), with a minimum predicted grade of 2:1
  • The right to live and work in the UK
  • IT skills e.g. use of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Proactive: self-driven with interpersonal, organisational, and multi-tasking skills

Job purpose:

The very first 'BAT Accelerator' Project in Cambridge has culminated in the development of test harness as a proof of concept for a connected e-cigarette insert. This technology needs to be prototyped and piloted to ensure that it collects and transmits the relevant consumer use behaviour data. In order to make this happen, we need a hardware/software engineer to progress the prototype to a consumer-usable research device, to collect and analyse the data for proof of application.

The suitable intern for this project will be a hardware/software engineer with skills to assemble the technology on a board that can replace the existing board in ePen3 (commercial product) and develops the required software to transmit and capture the data on to the cloud via a mobile app. They will also need to build a platform that will download the data from the cloud on to a terminal in Central R&D and provide access to this ‘Big Data’ for robust analysis and graphical output.

The intern will be provided with the test harness developed as a proof of concept for a monitored e-cig device to collect consumer user-behaviour data. He will be responsible to convert this proof of concept harness to a consumer usable monitored device that can be used by test subjects. Support proof of application study with real-life consumers, collate and analyse the data. In the process, it is expected that the intern will futureproof the device insert so that it can be used with any e-cig device variant.

Essential requirements:

  • Must be undertaking an industrial sandwich degree course
  • Studying for a degree in a relevant subject (Engineering), with a minimum predicted grade of 2:1
  • Has the right to live and work in the UK
  • IT skills e.g. use of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Further requirements:

  • Acts commercially and is consumer-centric – this project will provide the intern with an opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of consumers, customers, opportunities and risks to drive business growth.
  • Drives and owns results – deliver exceptional results by executing with excellence the delivery of consumer test device, fieldwork collecting and analysing the data and following through to demonstrate understanding consumer behaviour.
  • Leads change and innovates – challenge the status quo of using desk-based instrumentation and demonstrate the value of device in-built technology to improve and continuously innovate.
  • Previous experience in building hardware/software solution(s) to solve a real-life challenge will be desirable
