Data Science (Innovation Engineer) Placement

You will help us drive our Digital Transformation by developing new capabilities that take advantage of Machine Learning (ML), Data Engineering and Interactive Visualisations using both our internal and Customer data. The role is to develop and integrate our new Digital Capabilities into the rest of the business to help drive high level business decisions. The focus is on delivering useful insights, developing transformative capabilities and then effectively communicating with the rest of the business.

You will work closely with a Data Scientist who will provide support on the use of an appropriate programming language (e.g. Python or R), associated libraries (e.g. pandas, matplotlib, scikit-learn) and how to apply them in practice. It is expected that you will participate in self-learning both in and outside of work through, podcasts, blogs, books and on-line training. Our approach is to give you the opportunity to start delivering small scale but standalone projects right from the start so that you can apply your new skills.

We are looking for problem solvers, who are good communicators, self-motivated and are familiar with modern computing (hardware & software) and therefore placement students from a variety of backgrounds including Engineering, Computing, Physics, Finance and Maths are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Derive useful insights from our data and communicate effectively to the rest of the business
  • Support the development of useful capabilities / building blocks to enable our Digital Transformation
  • Collect, process and analyse data from various Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Help evaluate a number of Data Engineering toolsets and construct data pipelines to aid the business in automating processes.
  • Assist in defining our Data Governance policy
  • Stress test and commission our new Computing capabilities
  • Construct a real-time train tracking dashboard for displaying and showcasing our work within the business

  • Knowledge of at least one programming language (Python / R desirable but not required).
  • Passion, enthusiasm and a can-do attitude
