Environment, Health and Safety Industrial Placement

There are three roles available in total. Two roles available in the Centre of Excellence for Sustainability (CoE) and one role available in the Environment Health and Safety (EHS) team.

The EHS team is dedicated to protecting and promoting people’s health, protecting the environment and driving sustainability in the business. The EHS team is a global support team, working locally on site. They provide comprehensive support in all areas of occupational safety, environmental protection and sustainability to GSK sites world-wide. Our technical experts work closely with the scientists and facilities and through proactive engagement and advice ensure our sites are compliant with all regulatory and company standards, and industry best practice. We support them to act responsibly with integrity and transparency, living up to high health, safety and sustainability standards we set ourselves.

The CoE team has set ambitious goals to reduce carbon, water and waste across our value chain – from the sourcing of raw materials and the impacts of our own labs and factories, to the use and disposal of our products by patients and consumers

We know that the impact of producing our products and medicines is much broader than what we do in our own operations. In fact, around 40% of our carbon footprint and 85% of our water footprint comes from our supply chain. We view suppliers as critical partners in achieving our sustainability goals, and effective collaboration is central to that success.

That is why we are working closely with them to help look at ways we can reduce our collective environmental impact. By taking a value-chain approach, we are identifying risks and opportunities right across our entire supplier network – from our supply chain operations to our procurement activity.

Day to day responsibilities include aiding the team in the provision of a broad range of environment, health, safety and sustainability management aspects, systems and projects and could include:

  • Involvement and the opportunity to lead in running EHS promotional events
  • EHS performance data collection (internal and from suppliers), collation and interpretation, and assistance preparing EHS reports, including for example, calculation of carbon footprints and water impacts to identify opportunities for reduction.
  • development and improving data management systems and communications to the business,
  • Opportunity to lead biodiversity and sustainability groups in site engagement and activities
  • Developing innovate projects to support GSK in meeting its sustainability goals
  • Internal and external engagement on EHS, including GSK’s environmental sustainability commitments.

What you will learn:

  • The Practical application of UK environmental legislation on a GSK site. For example, how waste regulation shapes how the site manages its waste
  • How to influence and engage a broad range of people you don’t have direct control over to achieve the common EHS and Sustainability goals
  • How to prepare written reports and documents to present complex ideas in a concise way to senior management
  • The skills to organise and lead projects and events, and to work within a team to achieve common objectives
  • How a large multinational organisation works to manage its impacts on the environment and promote sustainability working on projects locally to support this.
