Finance Internship

In Finance, we tie together all financial activity across RBS, helping the bank make, spend, and invest money wisely.

Our core activities include:

  • Managing the bank's balance sheet and making sure we have the capital we need to operate every day
  • Reporting on the bank's performance, providing an accurate picture of our financial position
  • Achieving our business goals in a sustainable, profitable way, while developing the right long-term financial strategy
  • Understanding our customers' needs and helping them to make the right decisions
  • Helping our customer franchises to serve their customers well while remaining cost efficient
  • Providing a consistent service as one, functionalised Finance team

Our customers expect their money to be well managed. We provide the right information to help our colleagues make clear decisions about customers, costs and capital. And we help the bank achieve our business goals so we can be sustainable and develop the right long-term financial strategy.

We’ve designed our 10 week summer internship in Finance to give you direct experience of the work we do in Finance, our goals and our team culture. This programme will give you a unique opportunity to quickly gain experience and insight into the financial services industry, our products and our operation. You’ll also interact with and learn from respected industry leaders.

We’ll reward you with a salary of £21,500 pro rata, depending on location.

Our internship’s a great opportunity to:

  • Develop your skills, and build some new ones
  • Meet new people and develop your professional network
  • Deepen your understanding of our business
  • Experience our team culture and values
  • Get stuck into a real life project and add value to the business
  • Gain valuable career experience, which will inspire your future choices

For us, it’s also about finding and engaging with talented and passionate people who’ll make a difference to our business in the long term. That’s why if you complete the internship successfully, and enjoy your experience, there could be a place available for you on one of our 2020 Finance graduate programmes.

What you'll do

The internship starts with an induction. You’ll then begin a 10 week placement, where you’ll attend training workshops, get involved with our day to day work, and take part in a business improvement project with your fellow interns.
In the last week we’ll asses you against what you’ve learnt, and you’ll have the chance to reflect on and demonstrate this.

For the full 10 weeks, we’ll pair you with a ‘buddy’ and a line manager. Your buddy will be a current graduate, who’ll help you get settled and share their experience. Your line manager will provide guidance and support throughout the programme, discuss career options and help you develop your professional network.

To get a better idea of how you’ll progress through the 10 weeks, check out the Learning Journey below.

Learning Journey

Onboarding

If we offer you a role, one of the first things we’ll do is invite you to join our onboarding portal for successful interns. We use it because it’s a great way for us to communicate key messages and to make sure you’re all ready for your first day. We’ll pair you up with your buddy who’ll be able to answer your questions before starting and who’ll help you throughout your 10 weeks. We’ll also introduce you to your line manager before you start too, because we want to make sure you hit the ground running.

Induction

During the induction period, you’ll learn about RBS, meet your fellow interns and have the chance to talk with colleagues, including senior leaders, from around our business.
As well as giving an overview of the bank, the induction will outline the goals of the programme, introduce you to our values and explain the work you’ll be involved in over the next 10 weeks. You’ll also learn about the training we’ll provide and how we’ll assess you whilst you’re with us.

Placement experience

Over the 10 weeks, you’ll take part in a business improvement project, linked to one area of Finance. We’ll ask you to help us find a solution, or improvement in a specific area. This’ll give you the chance to complete research on a topic, work collaboratively, develop a business plan, and come up with recommendations for improvements or change to support our values. You’ll present on this, individually, toward the end of the programme. This’ll be a great way of putting new ideas forward, making a real contribution and getting a sense of what our team culture’s all about.

Social Impact project

In addition to your placement and business projects you’ll take part in an intern challenge related to an exciting topic such as making a difference in a community, sustainability or innovation. Working in teams you’ll have a few weeks to create a business plan and come up with creative ideas to a question or challenge set by our charity partners or the business.
Throughout the challenge our graduates will support you. It’ll be a great opportunity to develop your entrepreneurial skills, work with other interns across the bank and contribute to our sustainability strategy, while having fun.

Assessment

Towards the end of the internship, we’ll assess you on what you’ve learned, against the goals and values explained in the induction. You’ll be keeping up a learning log week by week, and you’ll be discussing progress with your line manager throughout.
In the penultimate week you’ll present the business improvement project you’ve been involved in, and you’ll also have an end of internship review. Complete these successfully, and we might offer you a place on our 2021Finance graduate pathway.

If you return as a graduate, you can carry the skills you’ve learned forward and take the next exciting step in your career.

About you

To be eligible for this internship, you’ll need to be in your penultimate year of a university degree, and on course to achieve a 2:1.
We’ll be looking out for people with:

  • Good analytic skills
  • Long term, strategic thinking
  • An inquisitive and creative mind set
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build great working relationships

About RBS

We believe there’s a right way to do business, and we’ve created a fair, open, honest culture that values your passions and will help you achieve your full potential.
