Engineering Placements

Automotive Test Engineering

The Automotive Test Engineering role sits within the Mechanical Testing department at Lubrizol. You will be part of a skilled, professional team made up of technicians, component raters, control specialists, test support and test engineers.

You will use your engineering knowledge, creativity and problem-solving skills to provide a high-quality testing service which is vital to the successful development of fluid technologies within the following areas;

  • Engine Lubricants
  • Automotive and Industrial Driveline lubricants
  • Fuel Additives

You will be responsible for developing, implementing and performing tests on automotive and other equipment – and performing data analysis to present your findings.
You will be helping to perform industry standard tests, as well as aiding the development of bespoke research tests on a variety of hardware from leading vehicle manufacturers. This will include; research, selection, and installation of data acquisition equipment into test vehicles as well as carrying out test data acquisition, processing, and analysis based on engineering principles. You will also get involved with presenting results to internal business segments including writing reports for your projects to be used for both internal and external purposes.

Mechanical Support Engineering

Working as a Mechanical Engineer, you will gain experience of working in a testing environment, helping to support the running of tests in the department on engines, rigs and vehicles.

As a student with us you will be planning and preparing your own work and leading projects, communicating with your team and other departments on site. Over the 12 months you will also be involved in design, manufacture and commissioning of new test rigs and test components which will provide you with experience manufacturing and assembly techniques. You will also be operating on systems such as CAD/CAM and use basic principles of mechanical engineering to develop solutions to problems.

Electrical Control and Instrumentation Engineering

The control and Instrumentation teams form part of the Test Support group within Lubrizol Mechanical Testing. Throughout the year you will be required to take concepts, perform research and design workable and cost-effective solutions which could then be tested and documented. You will be involved with aiding the commissioning on new test programs and installations and you will gain experience in the design and maintenance of electrical and control systems. You will also be gaining experience of engineering programs and software e.g. Matlab, Labview and Dewesoft.

At Lubrizol, we have a wide range of placements available across a number of different disciplines. At our Hazelwood site, for Science and Chemistry students, we also offer lab based roles within Chemical Synthesis, Applied and Strategic Research and Blend Test Services.

In addition to this, we offer an office based Regulatory Chemical Compliance role, which assists Lubrizol’s commitment to the health, safety and environmental aspects of our chemistries.

Our Manchester site, Blackley, home to our Advanced Materials research and development centre for excellence offers two lab based roles within our Performance Coatings Group. These are Research Chemist and Applications Chemist.

Requirements

You will need to be studying towards an Automotive or Mechanical Engineering related degree involving a year in industry and be achieving a 2:1 or above.

For the Electrical Control and Instrumentation Engineering role you will need to be studying towards an Electrical or Control systems engineering related degree involving a year in industry, achieving a 2:1 or above.
