Global Research Off Cycle Internship

Who we are

HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. In 66 countries and territories serving around 38 million customers, our ambition is to be where the growth is, connecting customers to opportunities, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper.

Our Structure

Our network covers both established and emerging markets across Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, North America and Latin America. Within these markets, we serve our customers through our global businesses: Commercial Banking, Global Banking and Markets, Global Private Banking, and Retails Banking and Wealth Management.

Overview

Our 10-week Off Cycle Internship takes place between March and May and offers recent graduates the chance to learn how research is used to help our corporate and institutional customers.

What you can expect

The research we do in Global Banking and Markets is important because of the confidence it gives our customers in our advice and services. On this internship, you can expect to gain a better understanding of how we build client relationships using research to back up everything we do for customers. You’ll work with a team of professionals who are keen to help you develop your understanding of how Global Research works. You’ll share knowledge, question what you don’t know and learn to respond to questions from customers.

What you will do

No matter what degree you’re doing, you’ll become part of the team. You’ll realise the importance of keeping on top of market news, economic data releases and day-to-day news flows. You’ll learn about macroeconomic, sector and company-specific research and how these affect the services we offer our clients.

You’ll also familiarise yourself with our trade strategies, business targets and analytical methods, working with research analysts and economists to understand how we use these tools. And you’ll realise the extent of our international presence by sitting in on calls with our US, Asia and UK teams.

Who does this suit?

Everyone brings something different to the role but we still value some specific qualities. We’re looking for:

  • Inquisitive learners. You should never be afraid to ask if you don’t know. Being inquisitive and hungry for knowledge will help you become a successful researcher with a strong understanding of our business
  • Motivated researchers. Having a determination to learn from those around you and to further your own career will be admired. We’re international and we are looking for people who want to take advantage of our global network
  • Analytical thinkers. Having a good eye for detail and a mind for analysing data will help you thrive from the start. But it’s equally important that you understand your clients so that you can help them make the best decisions
  • Opportunity takers. By completing extra training, working with new teams or taking on new and exciting projects, you’ll get noticed by our senior leaders. Putting yourself forward for new opportunities will stand you in good stead for our graduate programme

Career paths

You could secure a place on our Global Research Graduate Programme for later that year if you are successful on your off cycle internship.

We assess all applicants against our values and our global graduate capability framework. Information on our recruitment and selection process can be found on our hints and tips page

Qualifications

Be on track for a minimum 2.1 honours degree or equivalent (predicted or gained), and 120 UCAS points or equivalent
