Target Fabrication Engineer Placement - IRC246695
Each year we offer opportunities to undergraduate sandwich students to gain practical experience, working alongside technical experts at the forefront of scientific research. We offer an invaluable experience with exposure to world class science and technology, and the opportunity to develop working relationships that continue well after your placement has finished.
A placement student at Target Fabrication will be tasked with supporting the engineering requirements of the group. Supervised by Target Fabrication and with collaboration from the engineering group at the CLF you will have a mixture of office-based 3D modelling work and practical laboratory work.
It will include CAD modelling for target assembly jigs and creating 3D mock-ups of laser targets for on-site experiments to aid technically challenging assemblies. Use of a state-of-the-art 3D printer to create the model they have designed and test assemblies using the jigs. In addition, equipment to aid in thin film coatings will need to be designed, printed and trialled as well as various jigs for target transport solutions.
A personal project working with robotic assembly robots will also be available. Developing the work of previous studentships, investigations and practical work into the manufacture of simple pick and place procedures for high rep rate laser target delivery will be investigated.
- producing 3D models of novel geometries for 3D printing
- printing objects on the 3D printer. Cleaning and maintaining the printer
- inspecting and measuring 3D printed objects using a microscope to ensure they meet the requirements
- producing detailed CAD models and drawings of target geometries for schematics and manufacturing purposes
- progressing the robotic assembly project and designing fixtures and assemblies to aid this work.
Further opportunities could include:
- running thin-film coating equipment to create nanometrically thin foils
- measuring micro-scale objects using advanced characterisation equipment such as interferometers, confocal microscopy and coordinate mapping machines.
Job Requirements to be assessed at Shortlisting (S) and Interview (I)
- at university, enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry (S)
- right to live and work in the UK (S)
- A Level Physics or Engineering. Currently on Physics or Mechanical Engineering course (S)
- familiarity with Windows operating system (S)
- ability to use 3D CAD software to create 3D objects. Examples of relevant software include, but are not limited to,Blender, Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks and SolidEdge. (S&I)
- can explain clearly what 3D printing is and has a base knowledge of printing technologies (S&I)
- understanding of the difficulties of microfabrication (I)
- basic knowledge of the type of experiment that could take place with a high-power laser (I)
- basic understanding of thin film coating techniques (I)
- the ability to take-on technical challenges and work individually on a project, plan effectively and write reports. (I)
- can identify hazards and work safely in a challenging environment (I)
- experience of working in a team to complete a technical or scientific project (I)
- can explain effectively a technical concept clearly and concisely (I)
