Materials Science Industrial Placement

What does a Materials Science industrial placement have to offer?

Pharmaceutical materials science is about understanding and evaluating how materials used for drug, medical device and consumer healthcare products are transformed through manufacturing processes into the final form the patient and/or consumer will use.

These materials are typically active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s), pharmaceutical excipients (a substance formulated alongside the active ingredient in a drug product used, e.g. as a diluents, binder, lubricant, drug release modifier) or formulated products (e.g. tablets, creams, ointments).

It is a broad discipline involving both chemical and physical sciences. The technical Materials Science team use our specialist technical knowledge and advanced / novel physical properties characterisation techniques (such as microscopy, laser diffraction, moisture and gas adsorption, x-ray diffraction, powder flow, image analysis) to support our manufacturing sites to resolve complex problems across the many dose forms/products manufactured by GSK. We also support our manufacturing sites in ensuring we are successful when changing the materials we use in our formulations.
