Engineering Industrial Placements (Mechanical, Chemical, Automation, Device)

What Engineering Industrial placements are on offer?

An Engineering placement at one of our GSK manufacturing sites will give you hands on practical application of the theory from university. Our sites produce are either pharmaceutical or consumer focussed producing a range of products, from tablets and inhalers to toothpaste and mouthwash.

During your 12 months with us, you will gain experience in areas such as:

  • Project management and planning
  • Plant design, installation and commissioning
  • Problem solving, root cause analysis and resolution
  • Continuous improvement activities including plant reliability improvements
  • Safety and/or quality risk assessments

And, depending on your engineering discipline, experience of:

  • Mechanical: a range of consumer and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes and packaging equipment depending on the site
  • Automation: programming including Siemens PLCs and PCS7 systems as well as industrial network design and configuration including Industrial Ethernet, Profibus and open communications.
  • Chemical: A range of manufacturing processes, such as: dry blending, milling, enzyme extraction, solids separation, evaporation, powder mixing and transfer, granulation, coring, tablet compression, film, coating of tablets, roller compaction, milling, tablet or bottle filling.

Degree Requirements for GMS:

Must be on track for a 2.1 or above in an accredited engineering undergraduate degree. You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree, but will not have graduated at the start of your placement.

And we also need engineers to work in Research & Development (R&D) in our roles such as:

  • Mechanical, Automation or Industrial Engineering
  • Device Engineering

Locations: Barnard Castle (N Yorkshire), Maidenhead (Berkshire), Montrose (Scotland), Ware (Hertfordshire), Weybridge, (Surrey), Worthing (Sussex).

What’s in it for me?

In GMS we are leading the way in the rapid commercialisation of new pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare products from research and development pilot scale, through to full scale manufacturing. We’re also continuously improving our existing processes - introducing innovative technologies that are transforming the way we manufacture our healthcare products. Whether that’s continuous tablet manufacturing or developing flat-packed factories in a box – we’re changing the healthcare landscape.

During your placement you’ll have a line manager who will support and challenge you to succeed, you’ll have set projects that require you to work in multi-discipline teams and you’ll learn what it’s like working in an operating factory.

If you want to be at the fore-front of precision engineering or leading the way in healthcare manufacturing techniques, our summer placements or industrial placements could be for you.

In R&D join either GSK’s global Device Engineering Group, a multi-skilled team of Engineers, Scientists and Designers or join our Validation and Engineering team in the Pilot Plant Operations.

Device Engineering work across all stages of the product and process development lifecycle, from concept design development all the way through to transfer to commercial supply and you will work alongside experienced members of the team to carry out a range of activities associated with the design and verification of innovative patient centric drug delivery systems using state-of-the-art techniques and methodologies (to include Computer Aided Design, Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Dynamic device modelling etc).

The Validation and Engineering team oversees evaluating, testing and putting into service new equipment for the manufacturing of respiratory and oral solid dose medicines across both sites. You will assist Validation Engineers with a range of projects including equipment commissioning, change control, facilities management, validation, data integrity, etc.
