Safety & Engineering Placement

The Northern Year in Industry Placement is a scheme that is designed to attract and develop talented young people into the Rail Industry; we will offer you an opportunity to spend 44 weeks working as part of our Engineering team to help you get your career off to a great start. Northern offers a variety of placements across the business including opportunities to work in our Railway Operations, Finance, HR, Revenue, Stations. You will have the opportunity throughout the placement to work with our other Year in Industry students, to share your experiences.

During the programme you will be working closely with the Safety Team within Northern’s Engineering Depots (Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Liverpool.) Safety within the railway industry is vital and a lot of work and investment is being put in to improving the safety within our engineering depots.

The placement will work alongside the Engineering Safety Business Partner assisting him with ongoing projects across the teams for example:

COSHH – Reviewing COSHH process both at a procedural level and also what goes on down on the shop floor. This will include carrying out a gap analysis of the status quo (including a deep dive into our online system), making recommendations to improve our processes and helping the Depots and TPO implement the changes.

Risk Assessments – Reviewing our Risk Assessment process within Engineering. This will include carrying out a gap analysis of the status quo (including a deep dive into our current system), making recommendations to improve our processes and support our Depots to implement the changes

Lock Out / Tag Out – Working closely with the site technical teams, establishing safe systems of work for each of our fleets for the lock out of all electrical, mechanical and air systems. Developing a procedure for lock out / tag out, using our life saving rules documentation as a basis and support the depots in the role out of lock out / tag out.

Within the Engineering remit, we will provide you with an opportunity to support the delivery of the Transformation programme. There will be work relating to the digital train, cascades of our fleets in/out and around Northern and working with our shiny new trains. You will work closely with the new trains team and the refurbishment team and should gain a good understanding of operational railway engineering, from the planning phase, through to the delivery of physical work on a vehicle.

To apply, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You will be working towards completing a Bachelor degree or Master degree ideally in Safety, Health and Environment or similar is desirable but not essential.
  • Have some knowledge of safety management and/or engineering
  • Work experience is a plus, but not essential
  • You possess leadership potential and/or technical knowledge
  • You have strong communication skills and you are fluent in English
  • You have a high-performance and achievement orientation
  • You are interested in experimentation and innovation
  • You are able to think creatively and outside the box
