HR Placement

The Northern Year in Industry Placement is a scheme that is designed to attract and develop talented young people into the Rail Industry; we will offer you an opportunity to spend 44 weeks working as part of our Human Resources team to help you get your career off to a great start. Northern offers a variety of placements across the business including opportunities to work in our Railway Operations, Finance, Engineering, Revenue, Stations. You will have the opportunity throughout the placement to work with our other Year in Industry students, to share your experiences.

During the programme we will provide you will gain exposure to a critical time in our People change agenda, benefiting from a broad experience of working with a number of HR teams and across a range of HR activities. This will encompass the opportunity to work within an HR shared services environment, leadership & development team and involvement in front facing operational HR activities gaining some practical HR operational knowledge and experience in our unique environment.

In addition, the placement will provide support to project work-streams that are delivering our new HR information system, new recruitment system, and other key prevailing projects and initiatives.

About you

To apply, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You will be working towards completing a Bachelor degree or Master degree
  • Work experience is a plus, but not essential
  • You possess leadership potential and/or technical knowledge
  • You have strong communication skills and you are fluent in English
  • You have a high-performance and achievement orientation
  • You are interested in experimentation and innovation
  • You are able to think creatively and outside the box
