Finance Placement

The Northern Year in Industry Placement is a scheme that is designed to attract and develop talented young people into the Rail Industry; we will offer you an opportunity to spend 44 weeks working as part of our team to help you get your career off to a great start.

The Finance team play a major role in supporting the business transformation agenda which over the next few years which will see significant levels of business wide investment.

Our budgets and 5 year plan include over £100m of capital investment, placing high demands on the team to help manage all financial aspects of projects included in the transformation programme. This includes providing financial support to project managers, preparation of budgets and forecasts and ensuring accurate accounting in line with relevant accounting principles.

This investment programme presents opportunity for a YII placement to be part of the Finance team during this exciting time, developing core finance skills and gaining experience in the following areas:

  • Introduction to basic accounting and finance concepts
  • Tracking financial expenditure associated with projects
  • Supporting the Finance Manager with budget and forecast preparation
  • Opportunity to work with Project Managers and gain an understanding of the project lifecycle
  • Supporting the Financial Accounting team with entries in the Fixed Asset Register
  • Providing and developing reports to support project financials
  • Supporting financial period end and year-end routines
  • Exposure to internal and external audit
  • Introduction to SAP (a global accounting system)
  • Industry experience

About you

To apply, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You will be working towards completing a Bachelor degree or Master degree
  • Work experience is a plus, but not essential
  • You possess leadership potential and/or technical knowledge
  • You have strong communication skills and you are fluent in English
  • You have a high-performance and achievement orientation
  • You are interested in experimentation and innovation
  • You are able to think creatively and outside the box
