About Caterpillar

Caterpillar is a global leader in the field of small and medium sized industrial diesel engines, with world class manufacturing facilities in the UK, US, Brazil and China.

We have exciting opportunities within the Manufacturing Engineering department for under graduates who want to experience our global business. In order to develop and progress a successful engineering career, we provide the necessary resources, freedom and support to those who thrive on being challenged whilst working in a rapidly changing environment with a multitude of opportunities available throughout our business.

Manufacturing Engineering Placement

What experiences can we offer you?

As an industrial placement student you will take on important responsibilities within our Manufacturing Engineering team. During your year in industry (YIN), you will typically have two 6-month project based rotations which will major on Manufacturing Engineering disciplines from any of the following areas:

  • Manufacturing planning for introducing new products and processes
  • Continuous improvement opportunities on existing production lines
  • Developing component machining process solutions
  • Delivering global manufacturing projects
  • Designing and implementing engine assembly, test and paint solutions
  • Manufacturing systems and controls development
  • Sharing manufacturing best practise across global sites and implementing solutions

Your rotations will include close integration and collaboration with other significant business areas such as: Operations and Quality, Design, Mechanical Development, Product Management, Logistics, Finance, Purchasing, Suppliers and Customers enabling you to understand their interactions and how a company the size of Caterpillar operates on a global scale.

During your placement you will be given the support and coaching required to develop your technical and project management capabilities to ensure you deliver your own projects on time and to budget, getting hands on experience in a fast paced dynamic environment, and within a short period of time you will become an embedded team member within the Manufacturing Engineering department. There are also opportunities within the business to gain a MPDS mentor from a professional institute, either the IMechE or IET, and use your YIN to progress towards professional qualifications.

The experience this opportunity offers, along with the social interaction between the other placement students and our annual graduate intake, means that you will be well positioned for your subsequent years of study at university and a future career in engineering.
