Science and Engineering Placements

In the UK, we offer 12-month placement opportunities to undergraduate students looking to gain practical experience within a vibrant and innovative industrial setting. As part of the scheme students get a chance to cultivate their independent thinking and problem solving skills in addition to working in and contributing to a team.

Plant Biologist/Geneticist

We are looking for an undergraduate with knowledge of cell biology and an interest in synthetic biology to support the team in the discovery of genes that can be used to develop novel plant formats/materials that will feed into the Tobacco Heating Product discovery pipeline

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Learning to and conducting uni and multivariate statistical analysis
  • Mastering predictive modelling and network analysis, integrating heterogeneous types of data
  • Presenting and reporting updates and recommendations to the team and senior project stakeholders and coordinating the implementation of agreed actions.
  • Enhancing transferable skills, such as communication, organisation and time management

Candidates should have some experience of statistical programming such as R and must be willing to travel between Cambridge and Southampton.

Degree disciplines: Biology, Natural Sciences, Biochemistry, Genetics, Plant Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics or Bioengineering

Analytical Chemistry

We are looking for an undergraduate with strong research interests in chromatographic and mass spectrometric analytical tools and techniques to support the complete chemical characterisation of emissions and their fate from products such as e-cigarettes and Tobacco Heating Products to inform fundamental research, innovation development and product stewardship.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Expanding and optimising the LC ToF libraries in-house
  • Development of GC ToF libraries
  • Presenting and reporting updates and recommendations to the team and senior project stakeholders and coordinating the implementation of agreed actions.

E-cigarette Device Development

We are looking for an undergraduate to support the e-cigarette device development team in developing next generation technologies and characterising boundary conditions for current generation technologies, feeding into pipeline projects.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Exposure to human-centred design of new product innovations and consumer interactions through various consumer-led design techniques
  • Being hands-on, designing, developing and conducting experimental plans to evaluate potential new technologies and answer key questions around novel technologies
  • Working with internal teams and external companies to improve the current designs on a range of quality or consumer performance related issues
  • Presenting and reporting updates and recommendations to the team and senior project stakeholders and coordinating the implementation of agreed actions.
  • Enhancing transferable skills, such as communication, organisation and time management

Degree disciplines: Physics, Mechatronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Software Engineering or Product Design

Tobacco Heating Products Innovations

We are looking for an undergraduate to support the device development team on our pipeline projects.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Working on new product innovations using a human-centered design approach through various consumer-led design techniques
  • Validating suppliers’ suitability for commercial scale supply
  • Design of system components and material selection
  • Presenting and reporting updates and recommendations to the team and senior project stakeholders and coordinating the implementation of agreed actions.
  • Enhancing transferable skills, such as communication, organisation and time management

Degree disciplines: Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering or Product Design

Tobacco Heating Products Engineering

We are looking for an undergraduate to support the team in co-ordinating the identification of technologies with future potential as disruptive innovations and the assessment of such technologies.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Investigating device issues, identifying potential causes and conducting root cause analysis studies to guide solutions.
  • Use of design skills to create engineering solutions for device specific issues and coordinating resources to manufacture prototypes and test concepts
  • Being hands-on, designing, developing and executing test plans to evaluate potential new technologies, answer key questions around novel technologies and ensuring quality criteria is met as per specifications
  • Generating invention disclosure material to ensure the Intellectual Property of novel solutions are protected
  • Working with internal teams and external companies to develop technology or product prototypes to assess new innovations
  • Presenting and reporting updates and recommendations to the team and senior project stakeholders and coordinating the implementation of agreed actions.
  • Enhancing transferable skills, such as communication, organisation and time management

Next Generation Product Safety Assessment

We are looking for an undergraduate to support the product stewardship approach on e-cigarette device and e-liquid safety by conducting fundamental studies to demonstrate the suitability of ingredients and materials in e-cigarette products.

Job and responsibilities may include:

  • Use of analytical techniques to:
    • assess aerosols produced from e-cigarette emissions which could include identification of the presence of any decomposition products or contaminants in the aerosol by use of appropriate techniques
    • identify the materials e-cigarette devices are comprised of which could be used to improve understanding of device composition.
  • Presenting and reporting updates and recommendations to the team and senior project stakeholders and coordinating the implementation of agreed actions.
  • Enhancing transferable skills, such as communication, organisation and time management

Degree disciplines: Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or Natural Sciences

Next Generation Product Discovery

We are looking for a creative undergraduate with good problem solving skills who has an interest in working across a broad area of specialities including concept design, chemistry, engineering and consumer testing. The successful candidate will support the discovery and exploration of new technologies to meet future consumer needs for the next generations of both e-cigarettes and tobacco heating devices.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Working with internal teams and external companies to discover and explore new technologies
  • Presenting and reporting updates and recommendations to the team and senior project stakeholders and coordinating the implementation of agreed actions.
  • Enhancing transferable skills, such as communication, organisation and time management

Whilst the nature of the work is broad, the placement will include work in your specialist area of study to comply with your university requirements.

Next Generation Product Development

We are looking for an undergraduate to support the Next Generation Product team in improving current products on the market, as well as leading the characterisation of competitor products from identified end markets.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Using various analytical techniques to physically and chemically characterise the e-cigarette vapour, liquid and device from existing product improvements and competitor products
  • Analysing consumer feedback on new product innovations and competitor products
  • Being hands-on, developing and conducting experimental plans to evaluate potential product improvements, as well as constructing and completing validation plans
  • Working with internal teams and external companies to improve current product designs and manufacturing processes
  • Presenting and reporting updates and recommendations to the team and senior project stakeholders and coordinating the implementation of agreed actions.
  • Enhancing transferable skills, such as communication, organisation and time management
