Energy – Electrical and EC&I Industrial Year Placements

We’re looking for the next generation of engineers to design new power stations and innovative renewables concepts, extend the life of existing infrastructure and meet the world’s future energy needs.

What you’ll be doing

We have industrial year opportunities for undergraduates across a range of our Energy teams in the UK. From an Electrical/Electronic or Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Engineering background, you could be working in one of the following teams, here’s a little about what they do;

Bristol – Our Electrical, Control and Instrumentation team in Bristol supports a variety of nuclear clients. You could be involved with the design of systems to support a new generation of nuclear power stations, developing solutions to ensure the ongoing operation of the current nuclear fleet or decommissioning legacy sites and facilities. We are currently supporting a variety of nuclear clients; ensuring the safety of critical control systems, and developing systems for new-build facilities. We are looking for candidates with an electrical or electronic engineering focused degree.

Birmingham – Based in our Birmingham office as a power engineer, you will find yourself working on projects in the Nuclear, Offshore Wind, and Grid & Electrical Networks. Some of our current projects include electrical design and verification of the offshore windfarms, grid connection studies for embedded generation projects and conventional generation plants. Design and failure investigation of industrial installations, protection settings and design of new battery storage schemes. We’re looking for candidates who have a keen interest in supporting power system projects and occasional work at client sites across the Energy sector.

Epsom - Based in our Epsom office as an electrical engineer, you will find yourself working on projects in the Nuclear, Offshore Wind and Grid & Electrical Networks markets. Some of our recent work has included design for Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm, Hinkley Point C and various National Grid projects.  We’re looking for candidates who have a keen interest in transmission & distribution and electrical networks.

Leeds – Our electrical engineering team in Leeds specialises in all aspects of energy networks, from generators through to transmission & distribution and consumer. We carry out High Voltage substation, HV plant and protection & control design and consultancy services, as well as Operational & Management support and oversight and approval of construction and design undertaken by EPC’s. Our key clients are National Grid, EDF Energy, RWE and many other internationally recognised organisations.

You could also…

In addition to some of the responsibilities you can see above for specific locations, you could also be involved in;

  • Supporting on some major projects across various areas of Energy from nuclear decommissioning, new power generation and transmission, to offshore, wave and tidal energy
  • Reviewing and developing designs to improve plants, equipment, structures and Energy related systems
  • Carrying out surveys and site inspections, building strong client relationships
  • Using a variety of engineering software packages, as well as 2D and 3D modelling for new designs and modifications
  • Producing safety cases, reports and documentation to support the planning, design, operation, maintenance and decommissioning of Energy facilities
  • Carrying out design and assessment for new build projects as well as additions, modifications and repairs to existing assets.

Who we’re looking for

You’ll be on track to achieve a 2.2 Masters/MEng degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Control and Instrumentation Engineering

You’ll have ambition, vision, enthusiasm and the drive to keep on developing your technical.  With a passion for working in a consultancy environment, you’ll want to work with customers and with teams who deliver to their customers and you’ll be adaptable and happy to cope with uncertainty.  Communication and team-working will be your key skills as well as having the ability to apply your technical knowledge to analyse problems and create innovative solutions.
