Energy – Civil & Structural Engineering Summer and Industrial Year Placements

We’re looking for the next generation of engineers to design new power stations and innovative renewables concepts, extend the life of existing infrastructure and meet the world’s future energy needs.

What you’ll be doing

We have opportunities for undergraduates across a range of our Energy teams in the UK.

  • SUMMER – Aberdeen, Bristol, Epsom, Whitehaven
  • INDUSTRIAL YEAR – Bristol, Epsom

From a Civil or Structural Engineering background, you could be working in one of the following teams, here’s a little about what they do;

Aberdeen – based here you’ll be focused on projects primarily in the Oil and Gas market, as a civil or structural engineer you could be involved in; working with North Sea operators in supporting them in their brownfield modification projects and/or operational support work in their daily production.  This is a dynamic environment ensuring that code requirements, production efficiency and safe operations are maintained using innovative approaches to assets which, in some cases are 40 years old, operating efficiently and safely pushing your knowledge and capability to the full extent.

Bristol – based here you could work across many aspects of the Energy market, including nuclear new build, generation or decommissioning, and renewables. We are looking for candidates who have studied civil or structural engineering at degree level, and are passionate about being part of key infrastructure projects. For example, you could find yourself working on some ground-breaking UK new build nuclear projects such as Hinkley Point C or Wylfa, or those further afield such as ITER in southern France.

Epsom - Based in our Epsom office as a civil or structural engineer, you will find yourself working on projects in the Nuclear, Offshore Wind and Oil and Gas markets carrying out design and assessment for new build projects as well as additions, modifications and repairs to existing assets. Some of our recent projects include Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm and Hinkley Point C as well as site based work at Sizewell.  We’re looking for candidates who have a keen interest in structural design and assessment.

Whitehaven (Cumbria) - As a civil or structural engineer in our Whitehaven office, you’ll be working primarily on Nuclear based projects across the Energy and Defence sectors. Our ever-expanding portfolio of clients you could be working for includes Urenco UK, Sellafield Ltd, EDF Energy, AWE and many more. We’re looking for candidates from civil and structural backgrounds who are enthusiastic and hardworking, with good interpersonal skills and an eagerness to learn and develop.

In addition to some of the responsibilities you can see above for specific locations, you could also be involved in;

  • Supporting on some major projects across various areas of Energy from nuclear decommissioning, new power generation and transmission, to offshore, wave and tidal energy
  • Reviewing and developing designs to improve plants, equipment, structures and Energy related systems
  • Carrying out surveys and site inspections, building strong client relationships
  • Using a variety of engineering software packages, as well as 2D and 3D modelling for new designs and modifications
  • Producing safety cases, reports and documentation to support the planning, design, operation, maintenance and decommissioning of Energy facilities
  • Carrying out design and assessment for new build projects as well as additions, modifications and repairs to existing assets.

Who we’re looking for

You’ll be on track to achieve a 2.2 Master’s/MEng degree in Civil or Structural engineering.

You’ll have ambition, vision, enthusiasm and the drive to keep on developing your technical.  With a passion for working in a consultancy environment, you’ll want to work with customers and with teams who deliver to their customers and you’ll be adaptable and happy to cope with uncertainty.  Communication and team-working will be your key skills as well as having the ability to apply your technical knowledge to analyse problems and create innovative solutions.
