Vacation Schemes
Our Vacation Schemes are a great way to experience our cutting-edge work and collaborative culture. As part of the scheme, you’ll gain real and valuable experience, working alongside our lawyers on current transactions and cases. There are a plethora of events and presentations to attend, at which you’ll learn about key elements of our practice, while developing the skills you need to be a successful international commercial lawyer. We offer the flexibility of two schemes across winter and summer with students joining us in their penultimate or final year of undergraduate study or after they have graduated.
A&O First
If you think a career in commercial law might be for you, but you’re keen to find out more, then A&O First is an ideal place to start. Available to anyone in their first year, or second year of a four year course, A&O First is much more than just work experience. It’s a programme and support network spread over one year; designed to give you much of the information, contacts and experience you need to decide whether a legal career, and a career with Allen & Overy, is what you want. It includes a two-day workshop and work shadowing, followed by a return office visit later in the year. The focus is on building your legal and business skills, as well as guidance on applications and interviews.
Open Day
Our Open Day is open to anyone in the second year of their undergraduate degree and onwards, as well as graduates from any degree discipline, who want to know more about a career in commercial law. You will have the opportunity to hear from A&O lawyers on what differentiates us from us other firms, and receive advice on how to apply to a Vacation Scheme or Training Contract.
What we look for
We welcome people who are intellectually curious, entrepreneurial and agile; people who aren’t afraid to go beyond their comfort zone, and want to work at the forefront of their profession. You should be ready to embrace change, have a talent for problem-solving, and be keen to develop broad commercial awareness outside your chosen specialism.
Whatever you’ve studied – and around half our trainees have a degree in a subject other than law – we will help you develop into an exceptional lawyer and learn to do work of the highest possible standard. You’ll need to be on track to achieve, or have achieved, a 2:1 degree and 340 UCAS points (AAB), or equivalent, and have a genuine interest in law.
