Product Engineering

Brief description of department

The Product Engineering team are part of the Product and Sales Delivery department based at Warwick and comprises of four Field Sales Engineers, a Product Support Specialist and a Sales Tool Specialist reporting to the Head of Product Management.

The Product Engineering team provides technical support to UK and Irish customers primarily through the Dealer Sales teams, Bodybuilders and Equipment suppliers to ensure that vehicles are suitably specified for the type of operation required by the customer and meet the latest legislative demands focusing on Quality, Safety and Environmental care.

About the role

Working closely with the Product team, the Intern can develop his or her knowledge, gaining valuable experience in many areas within the truck industry such as, how trucks are designed, built and marketed in Europe, specialist segments and future developments.

One primary function is to help produce top quality material to the sales teams, providing valuable sales argumentation information on the features and therefore the benefits of the product.

This may be technical, homologation, systems and competitor information.

Responsibilities

In this role, the successful candidate will need to keep up to date with the latest Volvo and competitor product offers in order to develop a comparison library and where relevant, a guide, this will enhance our sales teams knowledge and therefore competence and confidence in developing a firm customer offer.

To assist the Product Support Specialist in the creation, production and delivery of quarterly Product Updates.

These are delivered mainly by the Sales Engineers to the dealer sales teams to show the latest developments in our Product range but offering an opportunity for the successful candidate to develop presentation skills too.

The production and delivery of Technical Sales bulletins for the sales teams where necessary, these can be based on a wide variety of subjects.

Alternative and/or additional project work could include:

  • Developing information on future fuels such as Gas or Electrically propelled vehicles.
  • ‘Vision standards’ for London and other major cities aimed at the safety of vulnerable road users.
  • Assisting in setting up fuel trials and result analysis.
  • Working with the Sales Engineers on Non-standard vehicles and other specialised equipment.
  • Many other interesting projects will be coming along.

Other Duties:

All day-to-day activities within the department including dealing with customer enquiries and any associated administrative duties.

Current degree requirements

  • Studying for a degree in an engineering discipline or relevant degree where the intern can demonstrate a keen interest in vehicle engineering.
  • 2 years completed – placement between 2nd & 3rd study years.
  • Academic grades on track for a First or High 2:1 in their chosen studies

  • Interest in customer-driven vehicle engineering
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical skills
  • Ability to engage with different specialists across business functions
  • Good customer service approach
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Ability to plan effectively and prioritise tasks
  • ‘Can do’ attitude and enthusiasm to learn on the job
  • A clean driving licence would be beneficial.
