About Network Rail

There’s more to our organisation than you might have imagined. Although rail is a huge part of our business, we’re also one of the largest land and property owners in Britain. We manage a huge property portfolio that includes 18 of the biggest stations in Britain, the retail outlets inside them, and the small businesses that live under their arches. Sales at some of our stations have even been outperforming the high street.

We’re also behind some of the biggest, most innovative projects in the country – from the world’s largest solar bridge at Blackfriars through to electrification and HS2. Pioneers in advanced technology, our technical team invented the use of HD cameras to identify track wear-and-tear more efficiently. We’re also responsible for the 17,000km-long fibre optic network that powers our trackside signals, telephones and electrical systems. We do all this whilst maintaining safety as our number one priority.

Finance Summer Internship

What you’ll be doing

You’ll carry out two rotational placements as an assistant management accountant or an assistant financial accountant. You could be part of a team affecting critical decisions throughout our organisation. Working alongside some of the most respected finance professionals in the industry, you’ll experience a variety of financial disciplines including reporting and analysis, periodic accounting and planning.

You’ll also have the opportunity to take part in experience days, site visits and shadowing. At the end of your placement we’ll ask you to put together a short presentation to reflect on your experiences and help improve the scheme for future intakes.

Who you are

You have a passion for making things happen and enjoy working as part of a team in a rapidly changing business environment. With an analytical mind and a flair for financial planning, you’re comfortable communicating with a range of different audiences.

Why you should choose this placement

A short-term placement offers a unique opportunity to experience many parts of the business, and make a contribution from day one. The scheme is run by former graduates who act as coaches and mentors to our new recruits. There are only a small number of summer placements available which means, if you’re successful, you’ll be highly visible across the finance function.

Many students go on to make successful applications to the graduate scheme and now hold senior positions within the finance team.

Where you’ll be based
Milton Keynes

When you need to be available
June to August 2018 for 10 weeks

Entry requirements

You must be in your penultimate year and be on course to achieve at least a 2:2. You do not have to be studying towards a finance related degree.
