About Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains Ltd

Do you want a career where you work on projects that push the boundaries of your creativity and technical capabilities? Where your passion can help to push the boundaries of science and technology on the Formula 1 race track and the road?

At Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains we are responsible for the simulation, design, manufacture, assembly, testing and racing of the World Championship winning Formula 1 Hybrid Power Units used by the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 team. Our state of the art Hybrid Power Unit powered the Silver Arrows to win the Formula 1 World Constructors Championships in 2014, 2015 and 2016. We are also proud to supply power units to the Force India and Williams Martini Racing teams. In addition to this, we are also leading the transfer of state-of-the-art Formula 1 technology into the revolutionary Mercedes AMG Road Car “Project One”.

Mechanical Engineering Placement

At Mercedes AMG HPP our 12 month Mechanical Engineering programme which will tap into your passion and determination to win, giving you a real opportunity to contribute to our success story. You will take ownership for delivering innovative engineering solutions that can go from concept to race track, sometimes in a matter of days. You will be an integral part of our Engineering Team, using strong first principles to overcome challenges throughout the Hybrid Power Unit’s lifecycle.

As a team we pride ourselves on challenging and developing our Placement Students with a rotation plan which will provide exposure to a breadth of engineering within Formula 1. In addition to this, we are also leading the transfer of state-of-the-art Formula 1 technology into the revolutionary Mercedes AMG Road Car “Project One”. To do this we offer time spent in at least two of the following areas:

  • Performance and Controls; maximise thermal efficiency and power, whether working to simulate ideas to improve combustion performance, undertake tests to evaluate performance concepts or improving Power Unit calibration to maximise drivability
  • Mechanical Simulation; develop and validate faster, more accurate FEA and multi-body simulations for critical areas of the Power Unit to enable more in-depth engineering understanding of these critical areas, and increase our ‘right first time’ Product Engineering
  • Product Engineering; every component is owned through its full lifecycle by a Product Engineer. You can be responsible for the design of components and/or systems from concept, through prove-out and into the Silver Arrows race car
  • Product Validation; determine the health and performance of every Power Unit. Work to prove-out the maximum operating envelope of the Power Unit to set out limits for racing. Data analysis to characterise the Power Unit and track it’s duty real-time
  • Test Engineering; strive to recreate the racetrack and race-car environment to make each experiment as representative as possible. Engineer test rigs to push the components and systems of the Power Unit to their absolute limit and validate the underpinning calculations and simulations

What can we offer you?

We offer the opportunity to work in a state of the art Research and Development centre, being involved in exciting technological challenges alongside some of Formula 1’s best engineers. You will get the opportunity to engineer solutions in world class facilities and, having been thoroughly proven at our Technology Centre, see your ideas raced in F1.
