About RBS

We’re the bank that’s determined to make a difference – to our customers, our people and the communities we serve. That determination is what makes RBS such an exciting place to work. We believe there’s a right way to do business, and we’ve created a fair, open, honest culture that values your passions and will help you achieve your full potential.

Technology Solutions Internship

Get your career off to a flying start with our 10 week paid internships in Technology Solutions.

You’ll gain a real insight into the role of innovation in our business, and be perfectly placed to join our graduate programme the following year.

About the programmes

Within the Technology Solutions pathway, we have two distinct internship options. You can apply to either our Technology or our Data & Analytics programme.

Both of these 10 week summer internships have been crafted specifically to give you direct experience of the work we do in RBS Technology, our goals and our team culture.

The Technology internship covers a wider range of areas, and will give you exposure to how we’re using Technology to connect our people and customers.

Our Data & Analytics internship focuses more specifically on the fast-evolving world of data, and you’ll work on an exciting project in this field. You can read in more detail about the individual internships in the listings below.

On both programmes, you’ll be rewarded with a salary of £18,900 pro rata, depending on location.

Both internships provide a great opportunity to:

  • Develop your skills, and build some new ones
  • Meet new people and grow your professional network
  • Deepen your understanding of business and technology
  • Experience our team culture and values
  • Get stuck into a real life project and add value to our business
  • Gain valuable career experience, which will inspire your future choices

For us, it’s also about finding and engaging with talented and passionate people, who’ll make a difference to our business in the long term. That’s why if you complete the internship successfully, and enjoy your experience, there could be a place available for you on our 2019 Technology Solutions or Data & Analytics graduate programme.

What you'll do

The internship starts with an induction. You’ll then begin a 10 week placement, where you’ll attend training workshops, get involved with our day to day work, and take part in a business improvement project with fellow interns.

In the last week you’ll be assessed against what you’ve learnt, where you’ll have the chance to reflect on and demonstrate this.

For the full 10 weeks, you’ll be paired with a ‘buddy’ and a line manager. Your buddy will be a current graduate, who’ll help you get settled and share their experience. Your line manager will provide guidance and support throughout the programme, discuss career options and help you grow your professional network.

For a fuller picture of how you’ll progress through the 10 weeks, check out the Learning Journey below.

Induction

During the induction period, you’ll learn about RBS, meet your fellow interns and have the chance to talk with colleagues, including senior leaders, from around our business. You’ll be assigned a buddy and line manager, who’ll help you get acclimatised. You’ll also have access to an on-boarding portal, which provides useful tips and advice, before you start.

As well as giving you an overview of the bank, the induction will outline the goals of the programme, introduce you to our values and explain the work you’ll be involved in over the next 10 weeks. You’ll also learn about the training we’ll provide and how the programme is assessed.

Placement experience

Over the 10 weeks, you’ll be taking part in a business improvement project, linked to one area of Technology or Data & Analytics.

In teams, you’ll be tasked with finding a solution, or improvement in a specific area. This will give you the chance to complete research on a topic, work collaboratively, develop a business plan, and come up with recommendations for improvement or change to support our ambitions. You’ll present on this, as a team, toward the end of the programme.

This will be a great way of putting new ideas forward, making a real contribution and getting a sense of what our team culture is really all about. You’ll find out about the specifics of this project during the induction.

Community project

In addition to the business project, you’ll take part in a community fundraising challenge. Working in teams, you’ll have a few weeks to create a business plan, with the goal of raising as much money as possible in one day of fund-raising activity for your team’s chosen charity. You’ll then put your plan into practice on the day.

Throughout the challenge, you’ll be supported by current RBS graduates. This isn’t a formally assessed element of the internships, but it’s a great opportunity to hone your skills, and have some fun, while contributing to a valuable cause.

Assessment

Towards the end of the internship, you’ll be assessed on what you’ve learned, against the goals and values explained in the induction. You’ll be keeping up a learning log week by week, and you’ll be discussing progress with your line manager throughout.

In the penultimate week you’ll present, as a team, on the business improvement project you’ve been involved in, and you’ll also have an end of internship review. Complete these successfully, and you could be offered a place on our 2019 Technology graduate pathway.

From there you can carry the skills you’ve learned forward and take the next exciting step in your career.

About you

To be eligible for our Technology internship programme, you’ll need to be in your penultimate year of a university degree, and on course for a 2:2 or above. For our Data & Analytics programme, the same applies, but you’ll need to be on course for a 2:1.

We’ll be looking out for curious and inquisitive people with a real passion for technology, and the drive to explore how it can be used to make a positive difference for our customers.

You’ll need:

  • A strong customer focus
  • An innovative and creative mind-set
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within teams

If that sounds like you, then why not apply?
