About RBS

We’re the bank that’s determined to make a difference – to our customers, our people and the communities we serve. That determination is what makes RBS such an exciting place to work. We believe there’s a right way to do business, and we’ve created a fair, open, honest culture that values your passions and will help you achieve your full potential.

Communications and Marketing Internship

By joining our Communications & Marketing internship, you’ll be supporting a team that works to enhance the reputation of the bank and its brands through our communications with colleagues, customers, the media, and external stakeholders.

About the programme

This 10 week summer internship will give you first hand experience of the work we do in Communications & Marketing.

Joining us, we’ll help you learn about how we support our bank in reaching our customers via campaigns and communication strategies.

You’ll be rewarded with a salary of £18,900 pro rata, depending on location.

This internship will be a great opportunity to:

  • Develop your skills, and build some new ones
  • Meet new people and grow your professional network
  • Deepen your understanding of our business
  • Experience our team culture and values
  • Get stuck into a real life project and add value to our business
  • Gain valuable career experience, which will inspire your future career choices

For us, it’s about finding talented and passionate people, who’ll make a difference to our business in the long term. That’s why if you complete the internship successfully, and enjoy your experience, there could be a place available for you on our 2019 Communications & Marketing graduate programme.

What you'll do

The internship starts with an induction. You’ll then begin a 10 week placement, where you’ll attend training workshops, get involved with our day to day work, and take part in a business improvement project with your fellow interns.

In the last week you’ll be assessed against what you’ve learnt, where you’ll have the chance to reflect on and demonstrate this.

For the full 10 weeks, you’ll be paired with a ‘buddy’ and a line manager. Your buddy will be a current graduate, who’ll help you get settled and share their experience. Your line manager will provide guidance and support throughout the programme and help you grow your professional network.

For a fuller picture of how you’ll progress through the 10 weeks, check out the Learning Journey below.

Induction

During the induction, you’ll learn about RBS, meet your fellow interns and have the chance to talk with colleagues, including senior leaders, from around our business. You’ll be assigned a buddy and line manager, who’ll help you get acclimatised. You’ll also have access to an on-boarding portal, which provides useful tips and advice, before you start.

As well as giving you an overview of the bank, the induction will outline the goals of the programme, introduce you to our values and explain the work you’ll be involved in over the next 10 weeks. You’ll also learn about the training we’ll provide and how the programme is assessed.

Placement experience

Over the 10 weeks, you’ll be taking part in a business improvement project in a specific area in Communications & Marketing.

In teams, you’ll be tasked with finding a solution or improvement in your assigned area. This will give you the chance to complete research on a topic, work collaboratively, develop a business plan, and come up with recommendations for improvement or change to support our ambitions. You’ll present on this, as a team, toward the end of the programme.

This will be a great way of putting new ideas forward, making a real contribution and getting a sense of what our team culture is really all about. You’ll find out about the details of this project during the induction.

Community project

In addition to the business project, you’ll take part in a community fundraising challenge. Working in teams, you’ll have a few weeks to create a business plan, with the goal of raising as much money as possible in one day of fund-raising activity for your team’s chosen charity. You’ll then put your plan into practice on the day.

Throughout the challenge, you’ll be supported by current RBS graduates. This isn’t a formally assessed element of the internships, but it’s a great opportunity to hone your skills, and have some fun, while contributing to a valuable cause.

Assessment

Toward the end of the internship, you’ll be assessed on what you’ve learned, against the goals and values explained in the induction. You’ll be keeping up a learning log, week by week, and you’ll be discussing progress with your line manager throughout.

In the penultimate week you’ll give a presentation, as a team, on the business improvement project you’ve been involved in, and you’ll also have an end of internship review. Complete these successfully, and you’ll be offered a place on our 2019 Communications & Marketing programme.

From there you can carry the skills you’ve learned forward and take the next exciting step in your career.

About you

To be eligible for this internship, you’ll need to be in your penultimate year of a university degree, and on course to achieve a 2:1.

We’re looking for creative and passionate people, with excellent communication skills both written and verbal. You’ll have an inquisitive nature, ready to ask the right questions. You’ll also be confident dealing with people, able to build strong relationships and networks.

It’s essential you can demonstrate a customer focus, as well as an interest in current affairs. You’ll be open to learning all things digital and taking ownership and initiative when it comes to your own work.
