About Rolls-Royce

Our high-performance, integrated power solutions are at the cutting edge of technology. From powering huge commercial vessels to nuclear submarines, supersonic fighter jets to highly efficient passenger planes, or rail locomotives to luxury yachts, we go above and beyond to create better. And it’s all thanks to our people. Whether they work in engineering or finance, manufacturing or project management, our 50,000-strong team work together to deliver excellence in the air, on land and at sea – to customers in 150 nations around the world.

Materials Engineering Placement Programme

How can we make our engines quieter, but stronger? Deliver power systems that are more cost effective, and also more environmentally friendly? What will the propulsion systems of the future be made of? These are the kinds of challenges you might tackle on our Materials Engineering internship. An internship with us is a great way to get an insight into Rolls-Royce and what it takes to do well here. You’ll be part of the team that provides new material solutions and expert advice to our design teams. The materials we use are fundamental to our ability to develop ever-better power systems, and because you’ll be working on real projects, you’ll have a tangible impact on our success.

The programme

On this 6 to 12-month programme, you’ll gain practical experience on real-life assignments. Along the way, you’ll work with some true experts and be taught valuable skills. Do well, and you could have the chance to join our graduate programme – a fantastic start to a career with one of the world’s most prestigious global companies. If you’re a student member of an institute, experience gained on your internship can be used to credit some of your learning towards your graduate programme and chartership status, should you choose to join.

What you’ll do:

Working alongside our experienced engineers, you’ll develop and apply world-leading materials technology in areas such as advanced polymer composites, high temperature nickel superalloys, high performance titanium alloys and ceramic materials. Your focus will be on achieving the highest levels of performance and reliability in our demanding product environments.

You’ll work on projects that support a real business requirement and have an impact on the final product, so this is a great opportunity to share your ideas and make a difference. As well as being assigned a technical supervisor, you’ll get on-the-job training, exposure to project management and the chance to develop other transferable skills. Your day-to-day tasks will vary but all of them will be hands-on. It means you can expect to be trained on specialist sample preparation and analysis equipment, like Scanning Electron Microscopes. Following your experimental work, you’ll deliver a final presentation to a specialist audience – a further opportunity to stand out and start building your professional network.

What you’ll need

We’re looking for people who’ll be happy to share their ideas about how we can do things even better, so we’ll want to see great communication skills developed through well-rounded life experience – academically, socially and in any previous work situations. You should be on track to achieve at least a 2:1 bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Maths or a relevant Physical Science, or equivalent qualification. Flexibility is important too, as you could be based at any of our sites, depending on the business area you join.

What you’ll get

  • £17,850 pa (pro rata)
  • Learn from experts
  • The chance to join our graduate programme if you perform well
  • Leisure facilities and numerous sports societies and social activities

Trusted to deliver excellence.

We recruit, select and develop our people on merit, irrespective of their race, colour, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, marital status, disability or any other characteristic.
