And it’s all thanks to our people. Whether they work in engineering or finance, manufacturing or project management, our 50,000-strong team work together to deliver excellence in the air, on land and at sea – to customers in 150 nations around the world.

Materials Engineering Summer Internship Programme

How can we make our engines quieter, but stronger? Deliver power systems that are more cost effective, and also more environmentally friendly? What will the propulsion systems of the future be made of? These are the kinds of challenges you might find yourself tackling when you join our Materials Engineering Summer Internship. A summer internship with us is a great way to get an insight into Rolls-Royce, and what it takes to do well here. You’ll be given fantastic exposure to the team that provides new material solutions and expert advice to our design teams. And because materials research and development is fundamental to our ability to create ever-better power systems, you’ll see exciting innovations up close.

The programme

On this 10-week programme you’ll gain practical experience on real-life assignments. Along the way, you’ll work alongside some true experts and be taught valuable skills. You may get a chance to join our graduate programme – a fantastic start to a career with one of the world’s most prestigious global companies.

What you’ll do

You’ll work on projects that support a real business requirement, so the work you do will make a difference to the final product. As well as being assigned a technical supervisor, you’ll get on-the-job training, exposure to project management and the chance to develop a host of transferable skills. Your day-to-day tasks will vary but all of them will be hands-on and we’ll make sure you have the training you need to work with specialist sample preparation and analysis equipment, like Scanning Electron Microscopes. Following your experimental work, you’ll also have the chance to deliver a final presentation to a specialist audience – a further opportunity to stand out and start building your professional network.

What you’ll need

We’re looking for people who’ll be happy to share their ideas about how we can do things even better, so we’ll want to see great communication skills developed through well-rounded life experience – academically, socially and in any previous work situations. You should be on track to achieve at least a 2:1 bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Maths or a relevant Physical Science, or equivalent qualification. Flexibility is important too, as you could be based at any of our sites, depending on which business you join.

What you’ll get

  • £17.850 pa (pro rata)
  • Learn from experts
  • The chance to join our graduate programme if you perform well
  • Leisure facilities, clubs, societies and social activities
