About City Year West Midlands

City Year West Midlands is a youth social action charity which challenges 18 to 25-year-olds to tackle educational inequality through a year of full-time voluntary service. As mentors, tutors and role models in schools, they support pupils growing up in some of the most disadvantaged communities in the region.

Leadership Development Programme

From Monday to Thursday, City Year UK's volunteers are integral to the school day. They encourage pupils both in and out of the classroom to engage with and enjoy learning, while developing their own skills. On Fridays they meet to share experiences and benefit from additional training delivered by experts from across the education, business and voluntary sectors.

In school, our volunteers will:

  • Support pupils through one-to-one interventions
  • Run and support extra-curricular activities to enhance the school day
  • Build relationships with pupils to tackle frustration, anger and low self-esteem
  • Improve attendance, behaviour and curriculum performance.
  • Support with work in the classroom
  • Be a role model to the children they mentor

Alongside supporting pupils in school, and making a huge impact on children’s lives, Fridays are dedicated training days where volunteers meet to share their school experiences and benefit from additional training delivered by experts from across the education, business and voluntary sectors.

Whilst on the programme, our volunteers receive:

  • Up to £3960 a year in living expenses
  • Additional travel expenses
  • Access to a mentor to support with personal and professional development
  • A boost to your CV, making you stand out to employers
  • The reward of a year filled with fresh challenges, new friendships and fun
  • Access to student finance
  • School holidays

Person Requirements:

  • Between the ages of 18-25 upon the commencement of volunteering;
  • Eligible to live and work in the EU for eleven months (late August 2017 until late July 2018) and dedicated to volunteering full time with City Year;
  • Intend to live in  the West Midlands during your year of citizen service;
  • Have the passion, commitment and emotional maturity to work with disadvantaged young people.
