About NCS The Challenge

The Challenge is the UK's leading charity for building a more integrated society. Our mission is to design and deliver programmes that bring different people together to develop their confidence and skills in understanding and connecting with others.

Freelance Creatives

Our Practitioner roles are perfect for skilled creatives who have experience of facilitating workshops and a passion for working with young people.

This is a demanding but incredibly rewarding opportunity to impart the wisdom and skills of your craft to groups of up to 13 15-17 year olds of varying abilities and backgrounds on the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme. The skills you teach will enable them to take part in a social action project in areas of their local community, and to build relationships with various community groups and organisations, including care homes, youth clubs and homeless centres. The difference you can make is unimaginable.

You will lead young people on this creative journey, which will conclude with the design and delivery of a short showcase performance.

Creative Practitioners need to have the following characteristics:

  • Enthusiastic about motivating young people
  • Experience of working with young people and the ability to build rapport with them
  • Experience of leading facilitated sessions
  • Ability to interpret the different curriculums creatively to involve all young people
  • A flexible, creative and constructive approach to problem solving
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve successful results
  • A willingness to take responsibility for delivering a challenging and safe experience for participants

This role is suitable not only for freelancers but students and recent graduates with the knowledge and enthusiasm to share their skill with others.

NCS allows young people to take part in outdoor activities, skill development and community volunteering. In summer 2016, over 38,000 young people participated in our intensive three to four week programme. 2017 is our most ambitious programme to date and its lasting impact relies on the 4,500 seasonal staff members who will inspire their journey.
The Challenge is the UK's leading charity for building a more integrated society and the largest provider of NCS. Our mission is to design and deliver programmes that bring different people together to develop their confidence and skills in understanding and connecting with others.
