About Volvo Group & the Department

Volvo Group UK directs the technical development of all Renault Trucks and Volvo Trucks for UK and Irish customers in partnership with Volvo Group specialists based in Gothenburg and Lyon. The UK team supports dealers, vehicle operators and body builders (third party specialist partners) in ensuring that vehicles are compliant with all appropriate legislation and fully meet the needs of operators throughout a vehicle’s life.

Within the Vehicle Sales Support function is a Homologation team which deals with compliance and registration of all vehicles, working closely with engineers and approval authorities to ensure that vehicles meet all legislative requirements, and helping shape future legislation through industry forums such as SMMT as well as UK and European Government interfaces.

Engineering Coordinator Placement

The role will be based in the Homologation department but will work across the Volvo Truck and Renault Truck engineering teams, offering the intern a fantastic insight to Volvo Group’s engineering and commercial areas, and an excellent grounding in a particularly complex, varied and business-critical area of automotive engineering.

The successful candidate will come to appreciate how the best engineering is grounded in the fullest understanding of a customer’s requirements, and the criticality of the engineer’s ability to interpret this to create the most complete and compliant vehicle engineering solutions to these requirements.

Responsibilities:

The legislative environment is expected to change significantly during the period of this industrial placement, with a major change to the Whole Vehicle Type Approval obligations for all vehicle manufacturers and other business partners. The successful candidate will play a key part in determining the implications of this for a number of Group functions, including Sales, Parts and Accessories teams, as well as on dealers and third party partners.

The changes resulting could have a major impact on how vehicles are prepared and handed over to customers. The successful candidate will draw together this business and process review, develop communications materials for internal and external audiences and potentially be involved in the roll-out of these new to Volvo and Renault dealer staff.

Alternative project work could include:

  • Registration processes – looking at how the efficiency of these can be improved to reduce the administrative burden and/or improve accuracy and/or speed up registration lead-times.
  • Market trends – review the integrity of vehicle data being submitted to industry bodies and provide internal reports which improve our understanding of customer requirements and identify industry trends regarding vehicle specification and segment application.

Other Duties:

The candidate will play a lead role in several areas of the team’s responsibility and be fully involved in all the day-to-day activities of the department, including dealing with customer enquiries. They will support the smooth operation of the registration process – ensuring that administrative employees have a clear understanding of those technical attributes which must be declared at time of registration.

A further duty will be to help review compliance of requested “customer adaptions”, i.e. non-standard specifications, with legislation, preventing mis-builds and the need for costly re-work or secondary testing of completed vehicles.

Current degree requirements:

  • Studying for a degree in an engineering discipline or another degree where the candidate can demonstrate a keen interest in vehicle engineering.
  • 2 years completed – placement between 2nd & 3rd study years.
  • Academic grades on track for a first or high 2:1 in their chosen studies

Competencies, skills and knowledge required:

  • Interest in customer-driven vehicle engineering
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical skills
  • Good Excel skills
  • Ability to engage with different specialists across business functions
  • Good customer service approach
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Ability to plan effectively and prioritise tasks
  • ‘Can do’ attitude and enthusiasm to learn on the job
  • A clean driving licence would be beneficial
