Research & Development Industrial Placements

Jacobs Douwe Egberts are looking for undergraduates for 12 month industrial placements at our Banbury Research and Development Center. We pride ourselves on being able to offer placement students an experience comparable to being a normal employee. You will be given full responsibility and accountability for projects from the beginning of your placement and you’ll have an opportunity fully integrate and actually make a difference.

We are looking for interns to be able to independently plan and execute experiments related to their project areas as well as produce technical reports/presentations and periodically communicate key findings to stakeholders. You will be part of a 25-30 strong student intake and you will have the opportunity to interact with your peers in other departments within RDQ, Retail and Manufacturing. Finally, at very busy times, you may be expected to support other ongoing project activities outside of your immediate team and, for some disciplines, occasional international travel maybe required.

Requirements for our Industrial Placements:

  • Currently studying on a relevant degree or masters course or recently graduated
  • Naturally inquisitive, technical problem solver and passionate about technical excellence.
  • Open to acquiring new skills and able to demonstrate strong analytical, communication and presentation abilities.
  • Pro-active, highly motivated, ready to take on new responsibilities and build strong relationships.
  • Evidence of planning experiments or trials.
  • Analytical skills to turn complex technical data into actionable recommendations.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office and able to learn new applications.

Food Science/Technology/Chemistry roles

The principles of Food science underpin a lot of the technical and product development within our business. We are looking for talented, motivated food scientists to join us here at JDE to help drive our business forward. You will be entrusted with end-2-end responsibility for project work and will be expected to work both with and without supervision. You will have the opportunity to gain exposure within the pilot plant, factory and in consumer test trials. We have two types of roles depending on your specialism and interests:

Category Role (e.g. Tassimo, Instant…)
In a category role you work closely with the business to support shorter term projects. These could be quality improvement, NPD’s, line extensions or cost optimisation. You will be responsible for applying the theory learnt at university to real world practical situations. You will design and conduct experiments for specific product development purposes.

Research Role (Science and Technology)
In Science and Technology you will support the longer term roadmap by advancing knowledge in a specific area. You will apply fundamental theory to produce technical breakthroughs, inventing the future of the coffee industry.

Chemical Engineering roles

We offer a range of opportunities for chemical engineers. Each area will help to develop and allow you to apply the skills learnt during your degree. There are three role areas in Chemical Engineering that also encompass Physics and Natural Sciences:

Process Development
The process development role consists of development and optimization of new pilot plant processes prior to scaling them up to commercial scale. This area will allow you to apply your problem solving skills to overcome key process challenges as we look to invent new processes to create new products and optimize existing processes to improve their efficiency.

Facilities (Projects/Installations)
Working at JDE R&D is an opportunity to thrive. You will gain exposure to the workflow of the R&D business operations, and develop knowledge of Coffee Production. This will include good manufacturing practices, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), food safety, quality, process control and regulatory compliance.

Ingredients Research (Chem Eng./Chemistry/Physics/Nat Sci)
The ingredients role consists of developing and researching new ingredients and studying the process transformation and product performance of our key ingredients coffee, milk powders and structured concentrated beverages. This area will allow you to apply your problem solving skills to overcome key challenges as we look to optimise and create new products and optimize existing ingredients to improve their efficiency.

Analytical Chemistry (Chemistry)
The analytical chemistry department own the methods used to characterize and specify important product parameters related to quality. They also interface closely with both science and technology and the category teams to support analytical work across a wide variety of projects. The team has state of the art laboratories in both Banbury and Utrecht.

Sensory & Consumer science (Food Science/Nutrition)
Working within the Sensory & Consumer science team in Banbury involved in guiding RD&Q programmes by utilising resources such as analytical measurement tools to provide a clear understanding of the impact of technologies, ingredients, materials, and processes on product / package on sensory characteristics.
