About Network Rail
There’s more to our organisation than you might have imagined. Although rail is a huge part of our business, we’re also one of the largest land and property owners in Britain. We manage a huge property portfolio that includes 18 of the biggest stations in Britain, the retail outlets inside them, and the small businesses that live under their arches. Sales at some of our stations have even been outperforming the high street.
We’re also behind some of the biggest, most innovative projects in the country – from the world’s largest solar bridge at Blackfriars through to electrification and HS2. Pioneers in advanced technology, our technical team invented the use of HD cameras to identify track wear-and-tear more efficiently. We’re also responsible for the 17,000km-long fibre optic network that powers our trackside signals, telephones and electrical systems. We do all this whilst maintaining safety as our number one priority.
Engineering Placement
What you’ll be doing
You’ll spend your first few weeks familiarising yourself with the railways, the team and our ways of working. After that you’ll get out and about across the country, possibly working as either an assistant technician or a project manager in your choice of either civil, electrical or mechanical engineering.
Your responsibilities might range from using NASA grade technology to help us capture and record information, to upgrading signals, carrying out on-site inspections or even working on Britain’s first battery operated train. You’ll gain valuable experience by shadowing an engineer or a project manager. Back at the office, we may ask you to write reports, review designs, analyse data and present your findings.
Why you should choose this placement
This is your opportunity to gain valuable experience of working on key engineering projects and really make your mark at Network Rail. If you perform strongly during your placement year, you could automatically be offered a place on the engineering graduate scheme.
Who you are
Studying towards an engineering degree, you have strong numeracy and organisational skills. As a team player, you enjoy working in a collaborative yet challenging environment. You’re enthusiastic about learning, take responsibility for your actions and are driven to deliver great customer experience. You keep an eye on the detail and are able to work to deadlines.
Where you’ll be based
Milton Keynes or York
Entry requirements
You must be in your penultimate year and be on course to achieve at least a 2:2 in an engineering degree accredited by the ICE, IET or IMechE.
