Professional Support (Defence and Security) Industrial Placement

Your challenge

Help make the UK a safer place by joining PA’s Professional Support Team (PST) placement programme.

Apply your people skills and collaborative style to work closely with both your PST subject matter expert colleagues and MoD client teams, and your natural curiosity, initiative, and proactive problem solving to some of today’s most complex programmes in the Defence and Security sector. The aim for your placement year is to develop your technical skills and gain valuable industrial experience.

Learn ‘Best In Class’ methodologies that are inter-related, i.e. successful Approvals relies on a robust Requirement and is supported and delivered by effective Project Controls (PST’s three specialisms). Operating in one of these pillars within a project team can lead to opportunities for you in the other two, such as supporting requirements development on future missile systems, delivering complex business transformations across various platforms and advising and supporting some of the largest acquisition approvals.

IT Delivery at PA Consulting Group

Our IT Delivery practice pulls together the latest technologies and a wealth of industry expertise. We design and deliver next-generation solutions for clients, including some of the biggest brands in the world. It’s a growing, vitally important part of PA. It’s also much, much more – in recent years, our teams have driven some of the most exciting work in consulting.

PST at PA Consulting Group

PA’s new approach to major project approvals is based on systems engineering principles. The PST, established in 2014, delivers a coherent and robust set of evidence to underpin business cases. The four stage approach – based on standard templates and tools - provides consistency, control and coherence in evidence generation.

The PST has already contributed towards significant cost efficiencies within the Ministry Of Defence and helped deliver some of the largest complex projects within this sector. Highlights include working with teams such as the UK Military Flight Training programmes, air to air missile procurements and Defence Infrastructure Organisation Approvals Management.

The PST allows PA to expand its successful consultancy business into new, interesting segments of the market where conventional consultancy is not competitive. It reinforces PA’s approach of not only providing solutions but also delivering alongside the client during extended implementation. Due to its enormous success the team has doubled in size year on year.

Your role in PST

We will give you introductions to the three key pillars of the PST: Approvals and Business Cases, Requirements Engineering and Project Controls. We will support you to develop and gain experience of these skills and receive development training which can support achieving industry recognised qualifications.

The PST’s growth is expected to see it become established in other UK locations in addition to the existing Bristol hub. Whatever the location, your place of work is very likely to be within a comfortable daily commuting distance.

Your career development is a core aspect of working within the PST and if voluntary wider mobility is required then your travel and subsistence will be promptly reimbursed.

These Bristol-based roles start in June/July 2017.

Job Requirements

What you'll bring to the PST

  • Studying Engineering, Maths or Business Management
  • An ability to excel and support others to do the same
  • Initiative, ambition and curiosity, including examples of proactive problem solving
  • Strong team and interpersonal skills

Due to the confidential nature of the MoD working environment it is essential for you to have an existing unconditional right to live and work in the UK. Please note that a willingness to obtain SC Clearance is required for these roles. Also, some assignments will require sole British National status.
