About Network Rail

Join Network Rail and you will quickly see that there’s much more to our organisation than you might have imagined. While we are responsible for 40,000 bridges and viaducts, 20,000 miles of track and thousands of signals, we’re definitely not all about rail.

With incredibly varied opportunities to grow, develop and take your career wherever you want it to, you’ll be able to explore the many different parts of our organisation.

About the role

We are currently recruiting for our Civil Engineering route-based year in industry placement. You will gain a breadth of experience that will give you an insight into what we do while maximising and nurturing your professional talents. You’ll also have the chance to learn from some of the most highly respected professionals in the industry. As our organisation is so large and varied, we’re geographically split into eight autonomous routes. You will be based in one of them.

You’ll take on real responsibility from day one, growing as part of a team while developing core business skills. You will learn through on-the-job experiences, as well as classroom based courses held at our state of the art leadership and development centre.

Salary for year in industry placements is £17,000 per annum (pro-rata) plus regional allowances where applicable. You will also be entitled to 28 days holiday + public holidays, 75% discount on season tickets (max £3,000), interest-free season ticket loan (max £5,000), up to five paid volunteer leave days.

To start your journey with us, choose the scheme you wish to apply for and complete our short online application form. If you make it through to the next stage, we will ask you to complete some online tests. If we are happy with your application so far, you will be invited to join us for a video interview, so we can learn a bit more about you. If you reach the final stage of the recruitment process, you will be invited to our Assessment Centre. This is not only a chance for us to assess you, you will also learn more about the position, and we’ll help you to decide whether our programme is the right choice for you as you begin your career.

How to apply

You will need to be available from September 2017, for a minimum of 48 weeks. You must be in your penultimate year and, having attained a 2:2 or above at the end of your first year, you should be on course for at least a 2:2 overall.
